Workers' compensation board awards prize for occupational health and safety initiative of NORMA Germany
Maintal, Germany, 10 August 2012 – NORMA Germany GmbH ('NORMA Germany'), a subsidiary of NORMA Group AG, has been awarded a prize for its successful occupational health and safety initiative by the Wood and Metal Workers' Compensation Board (Berufsgenossenschaft Holz und Metall). The company had embarked on a campaign to improve occupational health and safety in May 2011. In a firm-wide competition, the employees of NORMA Germany developed suggestions for improvement. The number of accidents could be halved thanks to the effort. As part of its ideas competition regarding the improvement of accident prevention, the workers' compensation board awarded a bonus and valuable prizes in kind for this occupational health and safety initiative on 10 August 2012 at the company's head office in Maintal.
'The health of our employees is very important to us. This is why safe working conditions are one of our key concerns', says Jens Wahl, Commercial Managing Director of NORMA Germany. 'We are pleased that we could enhance our employees' awareness of occupational health and safety issues. Their great creativity and dedication has made the biggest contribution to improve the safety of their work environment. Numerous suggestions for improvements and about 5,650 trainings on safety issues are testament to this fact.'
Since the majority of work accidents result from inappropriate behaviour at the workplace the occupational health and safety initiative called first and foremost on the employees to act responsibly particularly in production. In a first step which drew on the workers' compensation board's occupational health and safety campaign 'Risk off!', the company increased the employees' understanding of safety matters. Six teams of about 100 employees each competed against each other, developing creative ideas on occupational health and safety matters. The employees came up with a multitude of measures that were also implemented such as, for instance, weekly safety inspections of the workshops, seminars on how to avoid accidents, the possibility to make suggestions for improvement and regular safety trainings followed by quiz games. The effort has paid off: NORMA Germany was not only awarded a bonus; the workers' compensation board also awarded valuable product prizes for the five best suggestions for improvement. NORMA Germany is donating the bonus to the Maintal youth fire brigade.
