Competitive advantage in low energy wireless solutions

  • Nordic has strong competitive advantages in wireless performance and low power consumption

img-24.jpeg

NORDIC

SEMICONDUCTOR

> Designed for the specific requirements of wireless personal interface devices
- High data transfer rate
- Coexistence with other wireless devices (low interference)
- Rapid response time
- Ultra-low power consumption

> Key wireless target markets
- PC Peripherals
- Sports / Health monitors
- Audio / Media devices (wireless audio streaming and advanced remote controls)
- Game controllers
- Other (Toys / RFID applications)

Competitive technologies:

> Bluetooth (& other 2.4 GHz solutions)
- Strong data transfer rate and coexistence, but power consumption is major limitation
- Dominant in voice applications

> Sub-1 Ghz RF (e.g. 27 MHz wireless)
- Limitations in data transfer rate, interference from other wireless communications
- Losing market share to 2.4 GHz solutions in many applications

> Infrared
- Severe limitations in data transfer (one way), interference and range
- Most commonly used technology in consumer remote controls

Capturing new product designs

System-on-chip solutions and reference designs drive increased development activity among customers

img-30.jpeg

  • Significant growth (172%) in sales of product development kits ordered in 2H 2009 vs. 2H 2008
  • Sales of development kits indicate high design activity among customers
  • Rapid adoption of system-on-chip solutions and reference designs within customer engineering teams

  • Typical product lifetime of 3+ years following design win and product release

  • Design requirements create barrier to entry from competition during product lifetime

NORDIC SEMICONDUCTOR

Rapid adoption within PC Peripherals segment
