PROFILE – D. BHATTACHARYA

Mr. D. Bhattacharya is the Group Mentor and the Chairman of the Business Review Council (BRC) for a large number of businesses (both in India and Overseas) of the Aditya Birla Group. He also chairs CREC (Capital Request Evaluation Committee) for the Group's businesses; this Committee evaluates and recommends new capex initiatives. Mr. Bhattacharya is also the Vice-Chairman, Hindalco Industries Ltd., the Metals flagship of the Aditya Birla Group; and the Vice-Chairman, Novelis Inc., world leader in flat-rolled products and a 100% subsidiary of Hindalco. He is also Director on the Board of Vodafone Idea Ltd. He is a Member of the Board of the Indian Advisory Council, of the Schulich School of Business, Toronto, which is rated as amongst the world's leading Business Schools.

Before assuming these Group-wide responsibilities, Mr. Bhattacharya was the Managing Director of Hindalco Industries Limited from 2003 to 2016. Under his visionary leadership, Hindalco transformed from being an India-centric, predominantly Aluminium Company to a global, nonferrous Metals major. During his tenure, Hindalco has had stupendous growth, in terms of capacity, market positioning and globalization. The Company now boasts of a balanced portfolio, spread across the value chain, as also geographically. Its size increased at a CAGR of 40% to US$16 billion under Mr. Bhattacharya's leadership. The growth was driven through several organic and inorganic initiatives, creating a portfolio that is far less vulnerable to fluctuations in commodity metal prices.

Prior to joining the Aditya Birla Group, Mr. Bhattacharya had a 30-year long career in Unilever, where he held various senior level positions across its global operations. He was the Chairman of the Chemicals business, Unilever, India (Hind Lever Chemicals Ltd.) before joining the Aditya Birla Group as the Managing Director of the erstwhile Indo Gulf Corporation Limited in 1998.

His stellar leadership was recognized by the Aditya Birla Group with the 'Aditya Birla Ratna Award' in 2015, which was preceded by a string of awards and recognition from the external world, such as the 'IIM-JRD Tata Award 2011 for Excellence in Corporate Leadership in Metallurgical Industries'; the 'Fray International Sustainability Award 2011'; the 'Qimpro Gold Standard (Business) Award 2010'; the 'LEXI Award 2007 for Strategic and Leadership Excellence'; the prestigious 'India Business Leader of the Year Award 2005' and the 'Asia Corporate Citizen of the

IIT Kharagpur conferred upon him the 'Distinguished Alumnus Award - 2012' on the occasion of the Institute's Foundation Day in its Diamond Jubilee year.

Mr. Bhattacharya earned a B. Tech (Hons) in Chemical Engineering from IIT, Kharagpur and B. Sc. (Hons.) in Chemistry from Presidency College, Kolkata.
