MONADELPHOUS MUHIBBAH MARINE JV AWARDED $330M WIGGINS ISLAND COAL EXPORT TERMINAL CONTRACT
Leading engineering group Monadelphous Group Limited (ASX: MND) (“Monadelphous” or “the company”) today announced that the Monadelphous Muhibbah Marine joint venture (MMM) has secured a major contract for the construction of the approach jetty and ship berth associated with Wiggins Island Coal Export Terminal Pty Ltd’s (WICET) Project at Gladstone in Queensland. The contract is valued at approximately $330 million.
MMM is a 50:50 joint venture between Monadelphous’s wholly owned subsidiary Monadelphous Engineering Pty Ltd and Muhibbah Construction Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Malaysianbased marine contractor Muhibbah Engineering (M) Bhd.
The contract covers the construction of offshore plant and infrastructure with a 1.8km approach jetty and transfer tower platform, wharf, wharf conveyor including the drive and take up tower, berthing and mooring dolphins, ship access platforms, jetty conveyor and transfer tower. The work, which is part of stage one of the WICET project, is scheduled to start immediately and be completed by the first quarter of the 2014 calendar year.
Muhibbah Engineering (M) Bhd is a leading international marine and port construction company with an established reputation for quality and safety. It is listed on the main board of the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange.
“We’re delighted to be working with Muhibbah for WICET on this important Australian coal infrastructure project,” Monadelphous Managing Director Rob Velletri said.
“The MMM joint venture brings together Monadelphous’s expertise in the construction of large-scale projects for Australian resources customers and Muhibbah Engineering’s global expertise in the delivery of marine and port works.
“Our relationship with Muhibbah for the Wiggins Island project is the first step in a broader strategic relationship for the joint pursuit of opportunities in the marine sector throughout Australia. This is a significant milestone for Monadelphous in the development of our market growth strategy.”
WICET is privately owned and funded by a group of Queensland coal exporters to build an export facility to assist in satisfying global demand for thermal and metallurgical coal. The new terminal will be at Golding Point, to the west of the existing RG Tanna terminal in Gladstone. The terminal, operated by Gladstone Ports Corporation, will be built in stages to match forecast coal export demand.
Stage one has a contracted annual coal export capacity of 27 million tonnes. Once fully developed the terminal will have an annual capacity of more than 80 million tonnes.
