Carbone Lorraine is acquiring 85% of Boostec, a French high-tech company with 35 employees and sales of around €7m in 2008. Boostec develops innovative ceramic products used mainly in space applications. EADS/Astrium, Boostec's main partner, is retaining a 15% stake.

Boostec has unique expertise in designing and manufacturing solid silicon carbide (SiC) components, particularly for large space and ground-based observation telescopes.

This acquisition adds to the materials and technologies at Carbone Lorraine's disposal as it expands its range of solutions for extreme environments. Carbone Lorraine will use Boostec's expertise in sintered silicon carbide to make large SiC and reinforced SiC products. This will enable it to achieve further expansion in strategic markets such as solar photovoltaic energy, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, as well as new markets such as solar thermal energy.

The acquisition forms part of Carbone Lorraine's profitable growth strategy, which includes strengthening its leading positions in buoyant markets.
