FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Prof John Aitken, developer of NuSep’s SpermSep, Awarded as NSW Scientist of the Year 2012
Sydney, Australia 15[th ] November 2012 - NuSep (ASX: NSP) congratulates Laureate Professor John Aitken for being named NSW Scientist of the Year at the 2012 NSW Science and Engineering awards. Professor Aitken is the Chairman of NuSep’s Scientific Advisory Committee.
The prestigious NSW Scientist of the Year prize is awarded to an outstanding individual who has made a significant contribution to the advancement of science and/or engineering that benefits or has the potential to benefit our community.
The award, announced in Sydney on Wednesday 14[th] November 2012 by Minister for Regional Infrastructure and Services Andrew Stoner, recognised Professor Aitken’s world-class work in reproductive biology.
The NSW Science and Engineering Awards were initiated in 2008 to recognise and reward the State's leading researchers in science and engineering for cutting edge work that generates economic, health, environmental or technological benefits for NSW.
Professor Aitken has identified oxidative stress as a major cause of male infertility, a finding that has resulted in new methods of therapeutic intervention, including sperm isolation using NuSep’s Sperm Separation device, the SpermSep. He has directed distinguished research on mammalian sperm function, fertilisation and early embryonic development with applications in fertility treatments. His team has also developed potential contraceptive agents that could prevent pregnancy and simultaneously inhibit the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.
Dr Hari Nair, Group Managing Director of NuSep said, “NuSep congratulates Professor Aitken on receiving this award and is proud to be associated with his work. John is a very important contributor to NuSep’s endeavour to commercialise the SpermSep and we look forward to working with him in the future.”

About PrIME Biologics Pte Ltd
PrIME Biologics is a Singapore based biotech company that has developed a disposable therapeutic plasma manufacturing process based on NuSep’s PrIME Technology. NuSep has a 90% shareholding in PrIME Biologics. PrIME Biologics process is based on the Pr eparative I solation by M embrane E lectrophoresis (PrIME) technology developed by NuSep. PrIME provides disposable modular processing that is ‘electronically’ driven membrane fractionation.
The PrIME process increases product yields to over 90% relative to the existing process 50% while increasing product safety. The PrIME has been shown to remove virus, bacteria, endotoxins and prions which cause ‘Mad Cow Disease’. Further, PrIME Biologics process can produce multiple plasma products in hours compared to days, which is required by the current manufacturers.
The initial application for the PrIME process will be the Currently Unprocessable Plasma which represents approximately 50% of all the plasma collected in many Asian countries.
