Press release

Leclanché supplies lithium-ion storage system to Industrielle Werke Basel
(IWB)

  • Leclanché supplies industrial storage system with a capacity of 25 kWh
    to Industrielle Werke Basel (IWB)

  • Project development and implementation by the Zurich start-up Ampard,
which specialises in developing decentralised storage solutions

Yverdon-les-Bains/ Basel, 25 July 2012 - Leclanché S.A. (SIX Swiss
Exchange: LECN), the specialist for large-format lithium-ion cells and
storage solutions, is supplying an industrial power storage solution with a
total capacity of 25 kWh to Industrielle Werke Basel (IWB). The
installation forms part of a feasibility study by IWB to examine the
benefits of decentralised energy storage for grid operation. The use of
energy storage systems optimises current output and consumption locally and
increases the flexibility of the power grid, which in turn makes the grid
more efficient. The system is especially suited for the efficient storage
and shifting of energy being supplied by photovoltaic systems from the
moment of generation to the time when it is actually needed. The Zurich
start-up company Ampard is responsible for the control system and the
project development. The facility is due to be commissioned in Q4 2012.

'Feed-in fluctuations often test the load limits of the existing grids. Our
storage solution, which is notable for its patented ceramic separator and
up to 15,000 full charge and discharge cycles, steps in at precisely this
point and ensures that the excess energy is safely stored, thus relieving
the strain on the grid,' says Dr. Ulrich Ehmes, CEO of Leclanché. 'This
order is a typical example of the types of projects we are currently
involved in and reflects the growing need for efficient storage solutions
at an industrial level.'

'We know how important it is that renewable energy is integrated
intelligently into the grid. Our 'Arling' control system enables higher
capacity utilisation of the existing grid infrastructure by making the best
possible use of the energy storage systems. As the project developer we
will support IWB in maximising the benefits of Leclanché's storage
facility,' says Philipp Eisenring, Executive Chairman of Ampard.

Just recently Leclanché began the commissioning of its new production line
in Willstätt, one of the largest and most technologically advanced
production facilities for lithium-ion cells in Europe. The production line
has a capacity of one million large-format 35 Ah cells and a total capacity
of 76 MWh per year. The focus lies on home storage solutions as well as
industrial container solutions which can be used for stabilising volatile
energy input from regenerative sources or as mass storage solutions for
wind and solar energy.

About Leclanché

Leclanché specializes in the production of tailor-made energy storage
solutions. Leclanché's strategy is to expand its position as one of the
leading lithium-ion cell producers and solution providers for renewable
energy storage systems in Europe. Its initial strategic priority is
stationary home electric energy storage applications and expansion into the
stationary industrial and grid electricity storage markets. Through
participation in research consortia focusing on off-road and automotive
applications, Leclanché is positioned to take advantage of new market
opportunities.

Through a licensed ceramic separator technology and focus on
lithium-titanate technology, Leclanché manufactures large-format
lithium-ion cells optimized for safety and cycle-life in a fully automated
production process. At the end of the second quarter 2012, Leclanché
started operations of its first production line with an installed annual
capacity of up to 76 MWh in lithium-titanate cells.

Leclanché was founded in 1909 in Yverdon-les-Bains. Through the integration
of a spin-off from the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft in 2006, the company evolved
from a traditional battery manufacturer to become a leading developer and
manufacturer of lithium-ion cells in Europe. Leclanché currently employs
120 staff and is listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange (LECN). The company has
its headquarters in Yverdon-les-Bains (Switzerland) and production
facilities in Willstätt (Germany).
