4 TN dists get decarbonisation plan
S V K R I S H N A C H A I T A N Y A @ Chennai
TN government on Friday launched District Decarbonisation Action Plans (DDAPs) for four key districts – the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Ramanathapuram and Virudhunagar – along with a State Climate Action Tracker that will enable real-time monitoring of the state's progress towards its net-zero goals.
The initiative, led by the Tamil Nadu Green Climate Company under the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Forests, was developed in collaboration with Vasudha Foundation, a think tank. Environment Minister Thangam Thennarasu unveiled it in Chennai.
"With the launch of district decarbonisation pathways and the Tamil Nadu climate tracker, we are turning climate ambition into measurable, accountable action," said Thennarasu. "This is economic policy for a new era – one that will generate thousands of
green jobs, strengthen industries, and secure our natural heritage. TN will lead India to net-zero carbon not by promise, but by proof."
The four pilot districts together contribute over 10% of TN's Gross State Domestic Product and represent the state's diverse economic and ecological landscape – from Coimbatore's industrial base
to the Western Ghats of Nilgiris and the coastal ecosystems of Ramanathapuram. Studies indicate that up to 92% of projected emissions in these districts by 2050 can be abated through clean energy adoption, industrial efficiency and nature-based solutions. In addition, nearly 2.97 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent can be sequestered by 2050 through forest restoration, agroforestry, wetland conservation and coastal ecosystem rejuvenation. The
Tracker consolidates climate data
across emissions, energy systems, vulnerabilities, land-use change and resilience measures. It will allow the government to undertake evidence-based planning, enable transparent progress reporting and track the implementation of climate actions at district level.
"Tamil Nadu is proving that climate ambition means nothing
Tamil Nadu Climate Action pact. Climate governance must live where people live, and progress must be seen, tracked and delivered on the ground," said Supriya Sahu, Additional Chief Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forests. Each district has been assigned tailored strategies based on its economy and geography. The Nil-
without climate accountability. With district-level decarbonisation plans and a real-time Climate Action Tracker, we are shifting climate action from statements to systems, from intent to measurable im-
giris aims to achieve carbon neu-

trality by 2030 through sustainable tourism, e-mobility and nature-based sequestration. Ramanathapuram is targeting carbon neutrality by 2047 by electrifying its fishing fleet, reducing methane and nitrous oxide emissions and restoring mangroves and seagrass ecosystems.
In Virudhunagar, industrial decarbonisation, especially in MSME textile clusters, will play a major role, supported by largescale agroforestry and restoration projects around Sanjeevi Malai. Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu's second-largest industrial hub, will cut emissions through the adoption of electric vehicles, ex-
pansion of public transport, and
circular-economy innovation. "These plans integrate science, data and community participation. They represent a scalable model for other states to align data-driven insights with decentralised climate action," said Srinivas Krishnaswamy, CEO of Vasudha Foundation.

THE district and sessions court on Friday sentenced nine of the 22 accused in the 2022 murder of a 27-year-old history-sheeter and Mayiladuthurai town secretary of a caste outfit to life imprisonment. While one of the accused was murdered during the case trial, 12 others were acquitted.
Judge Dr Sathyamurthi LS convicted D Kathiravan, G Deva, X Sethu, M Santhosh, P Divakar, K Karthik, S Subash Chandrabose, M Harish, and K Prithviraj for murdering R Kannan of Kotha Street. A fine of `2,000 was also imposed on each of the convicts. Prabhakaran, also an accused in the case, was brought to court in an ambulance. The judge headed to the ambulance and informed him that he has been acquitted.
The case goes back to November 20, 2021, when D Kathiravan (41), a prominent figure in the Dalit community was discussing the Tamil film 'Jai Bhim' with his friends when Kannan and his accomplices – all caste Hindus – entered into an argument over their conversation. It intensified when Kannan and group assaulted Kathiravan, leaving him with minor injuries. Following the attack, the Mayiladuthurai police registered a case under the SC/ ST Act and arrested Kannan and
five of his accomplices.
On August 17, 2022, a group led by Kathiravan waylaid Kannan and his acquaintance Ranjith, and hacked the two with sickles, leaving Kannan dead on the spot. Ranjith, although grievously injured, survived. Following inquiries, Kathiravan and 21 others
– all Dalits – were arrested.
The violence did not end there, as on March 20, 2024, in what the police described as an act of vengeance, Kannan's brother Chandramohan and his associates allegedly murdered Ajith Kumar (26), who was one among the accused in Kannan's murder.

THE two-day festival marking the 1,040th Sathaya Vizha or birth anniversary of emperor Raja Raja Chola I (947 CE-1014 CE) commenced on Friday with the chanting of hymns from Tirumurai, a collection of Saivite poems, at the 11th century Peruvudayar temple in Thanjavur.
While the birth anniversary of Raja Raja I falls on the Sathayam star of 'Aippasi' month which is celebrated as Sathaya Vizha, the festivities commence days ahead. This year, the Sathayam star falls on November 1 and the celebrations commenced on Friday with the procession of around 250 folk artistes from the Thanjavur palace campus flagged off by Thanjavur MP S Murasoli.
District Collector B Priyanka Pankajam led the inaugural function.
On Saturday, when the Sathaya star falls, special ablutions will be performed on the main deities of Peruvudayar and Periyanayagi in the Chola temple following the garlanding of the statue of Raja Raja Chola outside the temple.

OBSERVING that a public ground should be available for the use of people of all religions and communities, the Madurai Bench of Madras HC on Friday granted permission to a Hindu temple to conduct annadhanam in an open ground near its premises in Dindigul, despite objections from local Christian community which said it had been using it to organise Easter festivals.
Justice GR Swaminathan passed the order on a petition filed by K Rajamani, representing the Kaliyamman temple in N Panchampatti in Dindigul.
Rajamani stated that he requested the Athoor tahsildar to permit them to conduct annadhanam in the ground, in view of the temple's consecration which is scheduled on November 3. However, the tahsildar rejected his request and allotted an alternative site, which happened to be a public road. Challenging this, he moved the court. Suresh Perkmans, who represented Christian community, opposed the plea citing that a stage known as 'pascha stage' was constructed on a portion of the ground 100 years ago and Easter and other programs are conducted there every year. Hindus were never allowed to use the ground, he claimed, citing a peace committee decision of the year 2017 to support his case. However, the judge observed that when the land in question is not a patta land but belongs to the government, it should be available to all. Unless cultural and civilisational unity is demonstrated in practice, there will not be peace in society, he observed.
