On October 3rd, the Merlin process was awarded with the European Environmental Prize 2002. The most important environmental prize awards enterprises, who fully integrated the principle of development in their business, and who are a role model for others. “We expect innovations, which positively combine ecology with social and economic aspects”, so Margot Wallström, Environmental EC commissionary, at the ceremony in Budapest. The European Environmental Prize calls for more than the actual improvement of environmentally relevant parameters such as CO2 emission and waste water. Wallström’s opinion is, that only innovations with a potential for economic success can significanctly influence the environmental situation positively, as they become accepted in practice. Being awarded by the EC commission, Merlin is among the outstanding process innovations in Europe. Less primary energy during boiling, less detergents, less water and less raw material are consumed. This has a sustainable positive effect on the environmental balance of beer production. At the Bofferding Brewery in Luxembourg for example, the Merlin reduces the annual emission of the greenhouse gas CO2 by 210 t, the burnt gas by 823 000 m3 and the waste water amount by 1,500 m3. Thanks to the low thermal stress, the wort ingredients are conserved thus resulting in beer with a stable flavour, excellent foam and high overall quality. end of message, (c)DGAP 08.10.2002 ——————————————————————————– WKN: 633500; ISIN: DE0006335003; Index: MDAX Listed: Amtlicher Markt in Frankfurt, München; Freiverkehr in Bremen, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Stuttgart 081251 Okt 02
