October 11, 2007. Peking University Press (PUP) and Brill are happy to announce the launch of the first copublication, A History of Contemporary Chinese Literature by Hong Zicheng. The book was presented earlier today at the Frankfurt Book Fair and appears in Brill's Humanities in China Library, edited by Zhang Longxi (City University of Hong Kong) and Axel Schneider (Leiden University). Titles in the series must pass through the peer review processes of both presses in order to ensure publication of the highest quality work. It is the aim of both Peking University Press and Brill to give the academic community access to leading research from China and to further enrich communication between members of the global academic community. The focus of the program will be on the Humanities.
Following publications are a monograph on the May Fourth Movement by Peking University professor of Chinese literature Chen Pingyuan, and Tradition and Modernity by philosophy professor Chen Lai.
"The primary intention for this joint initiative is to select research material from top scholars from premium Chinese universities, including Peking University, and help them find global exposure and readership. [Matthias Wahls, Manager Business Development, Brill].
"As the leading university press in China, Peking University Press takes it as its duty to introduce the high level academic works to our readers. For the language reason, most of our publications only have a very limited readership outside of China. This co-publication program by Brill and Peking University Press selects the works of the top Chinese scholars in Humanities to be published in English, which will undoubtedly enhance the academic communication between the scholars from China and all over the world." [Xie Na, Director of Rights Department, Peking University Press].
The basis for this strategic partnership between the two presses is a long term agreement which was signed by Mr. Wang Mingzhou, president of PU Press [www.pup.cn], and Mr. Herman Pabbruwe, chief executive of Brill [www.brill.nl, www.brillchina.cn] in 2006. Apart from the translation and co-publication of excellent research material from Chinese Universities both presses have also agreed to exchange staff, co-publish selected Brill titles in the Chinese language and co-develop new publications in the humanities and China Studies in particular.
