Holidays and bankruptcies affected passenger numbers

A total of 2,017,128 passengers passed through Copenhagen Airport in May. This was 14,780 fewer passengers than in the same month of last year, equivalent to a 0.7% decline. The year-to-date increase in passenger numbers was 4.4%.

A combination of many public holidays in May as compared with May of last year, and the bankruptcies of Cimber Sterling and Skyways caused passenger numbers to drop by 0.7% year on year.

"The reason why the combination of two bankruptcies and four public holidays did not reduce passenger numbers even more is that there is still good underlying growth in air transport. At the same time, the bankruptcies and the fall in domestic traffic shows how vulnerable air transport is and how important it is for us to reconnect the nodes of the Danish domestic route network as well as the route network to international destinations," said Carsten Nørland, VP, Sales & Marketing for Copenhagen Airport.

The number of transfer passengers and international passengers continues to rise, while the bankruptcy of Cimber Sterling caused a 34.4% drop in domestic passengers. The minor drop in total passenger numbers compared with a 10.2% fall in the number of operations shows that the airlines continue to improve their load factors.
