T ry this experiment. Face a window from across the room. Close your right eye. Hold your left index finger upright in front of your nose, so that its right edge matches the right edge of the window. Got that?

Keeping your finger steady, close your left eye and open your right. The finger seems to jump to the left. Estimate how much it jumped. For me, it was about six times the width of the window. Now, straighten your arm so your upright index finger is an arm's length away. Repeat. Your finger appears to jump left again, but a

much smaller distance. In my case, about the width of the window. You just had an up close and personal encounter with parallax: the way an object you're looking at seems to shift in relation to more distant objects as you change where you're looking from, and how much it shifts depends on how far it is from you. In effect, you have a way to measure the distance to your finger. It's more complicated

than just this much, but a good way to understand what's happening is that there's a mathematical relationship at work: the further your index finger, the less it seems to move in relation to the window— the smaller the parallax shift. In fact, you can use parallax to estimate the distance to the window— after all, you likely have a good idea of how far away your finger is, but you may not know how far the window is.

The idea of parallax is at the core of a recent flood of estimates of distances to stars. Observe a star against a background of other, much further, stars. Repeat your observation six months later, when the Earth has moved to a point in its orbit diametrically opposite the first point. The shift in the Earth's position, of course, is analogous to looking out of first your left and then your right eye. And of course, you expect to see the effect of parallax: that the star you're observing seems have moved in relation to more distant ones. If you can measure how much it seems to have moved and if you have a reasonable idea how far it is, you can calculate how far the distant stars are.

There are complications, of course. For one thing, all stars move, all the time. So, if you do notice that the star seems to have moved against the background, is that due to parallax? Or to its own intrinsic movement? Or both?

For another thing, even the nearest star is so far away that an apparent change in its position due to parallax will be tiny indeed and extremely hard to detect. To put this in perspective: the distance between the Earth's positions six months apart— the diameter of its orbit— is about 300 million km, or about 1,000 light seconds (i.e. light takes 1,000 seconds to travel that distance). Compare to the distance to Proxima Centauri, the star that's closest to us— which is about 4.2 light years, or about 130,000 times the diameter of Earth's orbit. How much of a parallax shift do you think you might notice in a finger that's held upright 10km from you?

That's a measure of the challenge astronomers face in observing and measuring parallax. Still, we have some powerful telescopes indeed stationed in space. One, the European Space Agency's Gaia space observatory, is in an orbit that varies between 250,000km and 700,000km above the Earth's surface. From there, Gaia measures the position, movement and distance of millions of cosmic

C redit card spends on leisure goods and services and travel improved among affluent shoppers once the second wave of covid-19 infections started to taper off, members-only credit card bill payment platform Cred said on Thursday.

Cred analysed data of more than 3 million affluent credit card users in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, and Kolkata. It compared spends made between three periods, including 1 April to 31 May 2020, when the first wave of pandemic was ravaging the country, 1 January to 31 March 2021, or before the second wave hit, and from 1 April to 31 May 2021, or after the second wave.

"Spending on leisure was low all over the country during the first wave of the pandemic (14% of total expenditure), because of strict curbs. However, there was a sharp spike across all six cities as the restrictions were eased and more people started going out. With greater mobilization, the demand for leisure goods and services increased as well and peaked before the second wave," the Cred analysis said.

For Delhi and Hyderabad, expenditure on leisure was 19% of the total spends once the second wave started to ebb. Mumbai expenditure stood at 18%. Those in Bengaluru diverted 21% of their spends on leisure. Kolkata spent the most on leisure at 23%, while Pune spent 17%.

In the first wave, spends on leisure in the national capital region stood at 13% of overall credit card spends. Leisure includes activities such as spending on food, including eating out at restaurants or ordering

food via aggregators such as Swiggy and Zomato. It also includes shopping both online and offline.

India was in the grip of a devastating second covid-19 wave in April and May. Some states started lifting curbs partially only towards the end of May. "The spending power of the affluent consumers in India is not usually hit by ups and downs of the

economy," said Kunal Shah, founder and chief executive officer of Cred.

During the first wave, expenditure was primarily led by a necessity to buy essentials. Consumers restrained themselves from travelling during that time. "However, as the restrictions were lifted and travelling became easier…people spent a lot on domestic travel. The trend peaked just before the second wave hit (10% of all spends was on travel). Even the rising cases and restrictions did not deter people from travelling as travel expenditure did not take a dip (8%) in the post-second wave period indicating high demand," Cred said.

The company also monitored the spending habits of credit card users aged between 18 and 25 years. Consumers in this age group spent heavily on leisure rather than on travel and banking (making bank payments), it said.

"Their expenditure on banking dipped considerably compared to the first wave from 8% of their overall spends to 5% in the pre-second wave. This age cohort spent significantly on leisure—23% before the second wave hit. The trends are continuing even after the second wave," it said.

Their work has given us new degrees of precision in our calculation of how far they are from us. In turn, that has refined our estimate of a number that's fundamental to our understanding of our universe: the Hubble Constant.

A quick introduction to the Hubble Constant might be in order. You've heard of the Doppler shift, which explains why a car's horn sounds higher-pitched as it approaches you, and lower as it speeds away from you. That is, if you hear a horn getting steadily lowerpitched, you know the car is moving, and moving away from you. If you are able to measure the sound's frequency, you might even calculate the speed of the motion.

Over a century ago, astronomers began to notice that the light from distant celestial objects was Doppler shifted as well. The natural inference came as a surprise: most of these objects are moving away from us. But it's not just that they are moving away. The astronomers found that the further an object is from us, the more its light is Doppler shifted. What that implied was even more of a surprise: the further the object, the faster it is moving away. That is, there is a relationship between speed and distance.

That relationship is captured in the Hubble Constant, named for the great astronomer Edwin Hubble who first made these observations. He estimated that for every million light years (mly) further an object is from us, the speed at which it recedes from us increases by 150km/s. The Hubble Constant, then, was 150km/s/mly. "Was", because more accurate modern measurements suggest it is about 23km/s/mly. These days, it is usually expressed using parsecs (pc) rather than light years. Since one parsec is just over three light years, the Hubble Constant is about 70km/s/Mpc (mega parsecs).

Why is this one number so fundamental? If a galaxy, say, is accelerating as time passes, as it travels ever further from us well, think about running the clock backward. The galaxy slows down as it gets closer to us, it gets even closer and slows down still more, and this is simultaneously happening to all galaxies, all approaching each other, until we reach that mysterious moment when all the matter in the uni-

verse was once smooshed together. We've reached that instant before the cataclysmic Big Bang. From the Hubble Constant, we can actually calculate how long ago that was: about 14 billion years. 14 billion years: that's how old the universe is. See why the Hubble Constant is fundamental to our understanding, our idea, of our universe? That the new measurements of distance using parallax are much more accurate means we can more precisely calculate the Hubble Constant. In a paper they submitted to the Astrophysical Journal (Cosmic distances calibrated to 1% precision with GAIA EDR3 parallaxes and Hubble Space Telescope photometry of 75 Milky Way Cepheids confirm tension with ACDM, Adam G. Riess, Stefano Casertano et al, 5 January 2021, bit.ly/2UzPQMn), the team of astronomers call it 73.2 km/s/Mpc. Which means the age of the universe is not 14 billion, but only 13.4 billion years. Not a huge difference? What's a half billion years here or there, you think? But it's from these numbers and ideas that we come to grips with where we are in this vast cosmos, that we gain some perspective on our existence. And that's why the ever-greater precision is important.

There's more, hinted at by the word "tension" in the title of the paper. If galaxies are all receding, that means the universe is expanding. There are ways to predict how fast they should be receding, but the Hubble Constant suggests they are faster still. Why? Of this so-called Hubble tension, another time.

दो साल और बढाना चाहता है। ऐसे में भारत की राहत की उम्मीदें अब ओपेक और यूएई के झगड़े में फंस गई हैं।

भारत समेत दुनियाभर के देशों में महंगाई की आग भड़की हुई है। लेकिन भारत में जिस यानी कमोडिटी के दाम अन्य देशों की तलना में काफी तेजी से बढे हैं। पिछले एक साल में खाद्य तेलों के दामों में लगभग 30 से 40 फीसदी की तेजी आई है। यह महंगाई तेजी उत्पादन घटने या मांग बढने से नहीं आई है बल्कि मांग में कमी और लागत में वद्धि से आई है।

खाद्य तेल और पेट्रोल-डीजल के अलावा रसोई गैस के दाम में भी इजाफा हुआ है जिसकी चौतरफा मार उपभोक्ताओं पर पड़ रही है। महंगाई .के मामले में अमेरिका. चीन, रूस और ब्राजील में भी यही स्थिति है लेकिन भारत में स्थिति ज्यादा चुनौतीपूर्ण है। मांग कम होने के बावजूद महंगाई बढ़ना विशेषज्ञों के लिए हैरान करने वाला है। विशेषज्ञों का कहना है कि आपूर्ति शृंखला में बाधा महंगाई बढ़ने की एक बड़ी वजह हो सकती है।

पिछले एक साल में देश में पेटोल-डीजल की कीमत करीब 25 फीसदी बढी है। विशेषज्ञों का कहना है इससे सीधे तौर पर महंगाई में 2.5 फीसदी इजाफा होना चाहिए। लेकिन इस अवधि में मालभाड़ा करीब दोगुना हो गया है। इसकी वजह से महंगाई उम्मीद से कहीं ज्यादा तेजी से बढ़ी है। इसका असर आम आदमी की जेब पर हो रहा है।

रिजर्व बैंक ने चेताया

्रिजर्व बैंक गवर्नर शक्तिकांत दास ने मौद्रिक समीक्षा नीति में कहा था कि -महंगाई रोकने के लिए चौतरफा उपाय नहीं किए गए तो आने वाले समय में यह बडी चनौती बन सकती है । हालांकि, भारतीय रिजर्व बैंक का मानना है कि लंबी अवधि में यह पांच फीसदी के दायरे में रह सकती है।

क्या है झगडे की जड

अप्रैल २०२० में दुनियाभर में कोरोना की वजह से लॉकडाउन होने से कच्चे तेल की कीतमें 20 डॉलर प्रति बैरल पर पहुंच गई थीं जो 18 साल का निम्नतम स्तर है। इसके बाद ओपेक और सहयोगी देशों ने उत्पादन में कटौती का फैसला किया। एक तय मात्रा में अगले दो साल तक उत्पादन कटौती पर सहमति बनी। टीकाकरण के बाद बाजार खुलने से ओपेक को उम्मीद है कि इस साल अगस्त से मांग बढ़ेगी। वह पुराना करार खत्म करना चाहता है । जबकि यूएई उस करार को दो साल और बढ़ाना चाहता है।

जोमैटो का आईपीओ १४ को खुलेगा

नई दिल्ली। ऑनलाइन ऑर्डर लेकर खाना पहंचने वाले मंच जोमैटो ने गुरुवार को कहा कि उसे अपने आरंभिक सार्वजनिक निर्गम ( आईपीओ ) से 9,375 करोड़ रुपये जुटाने की उम्मीद है और यह निर्गम 14 जुलाई से 16 जलाई तक बोली के लिए खलेगा। निर्गम के लिए कीमत का दायरा 72 रुपये से 76 रुपये प्रति शेयर तय किया गया है। इस सप्ताह की शुरुआत में जोमैटो को बाजार नियामक सेबी से आईपीओ लाने की इजाजत मिली थी। आईपीओ का आकार 9,375 करोड़ रुपये है और इसके तहत 9,000 करोड़ रुपये के नए शेयर जारी किए जाएंगे।

मामलों में 10408 करोड़ रुपये के आयकर रिफंड किए गए हैं।

चार कार कंपनियों पर एक अरब डॉलर का जुमोना

बिजली की मांग सोना सुस्त रहा रिकॉर्ड स्तर पर चांदी नीचे उतरी

नई दिल्ली। मजबूत वैश्विक रुख और रुपये के मूल्य में गिरावट के कारण सर्राफा बाजार में सोना नौ रुपये की मामुली तेजी के साथ 46,991 रुपये प्रति 10 ग्राम हो गया। इससे पिछले कारोबारी सत्र में सोना 46,972 रुपये प्रति 10 ग्राम पर बंद हुआ था।

चांदी की कीमत 902 रुपये की गिरावट के साथ 67,758 रुपये प्रति किलोग्राम पर आ गई। पिछले कारोबारी सत्र में इसका बंद भाव 68,660 रुपये प्रति किलो था।

अमेजन की याचिका पर 20 को होगी सुनवाई

उच्चतम न्यायालय ने गुरुवार को कहा कि वह फ्यूचर-रिलायंस सौदे को लेकर 20 जुलाई को दिल्ली उच्च न्यायालय के फैसले के खिलाफ अमेजन की याचिका पर सुनवाई करेगा। अमेजन ने आठ अप्रैल को शीर्ष अदालत में याचिका दायर कर दिल्ली उच्च न्यायालय की खंडपीठ के उस आदेश को चुनौती दी थी जिसमें किशोर बियाणी को अगुवाई वाले फ्यूचर समूह पर रिलायंस इंडस्ट्रीज के साथ किये

गये 24,713 करोड़ रुपये के संपत्ति बिक्री सौदे पर लगायी गयी रोक को

हटा दिया गया था। एकल न्यायाधीश की पीठ ने सिंगापुर मध्यस्थता न्यायाधिकरण के आदेश को बरकरार रखा था जिसमें एफआरएल को रिलायंस इंडस्ट्रीज के साथ 24,713 करोड़ रुपये के सौदे को लेकर कदम बढ़ाने से मना किया गया था। फ्यूचर के वरिष्ठ अधिवक्ता हरीश साल्वे ने पीठ को बताया कि सिंगापुर की अदालत में 12 जुलाई से इस मुद्दे पर सुनवाई शुरू होगी।

.उपरोक्त के आधार कार्यालय आदेश संख्या-402/टी0आर0ह0वा0/का0आ0/पंजीयन .निरस्त/2020 दिनांक 29.12.2020 द्वारा जनपद गाजियाबाद में पंजीकृत ऐसे सभी यान (गैर .परिवहन यान) जिनकी पंजीयन दिनांक 01.01.1995 से दिनांक 30.06.2001 तक है एवं एवं जिनकी पंजीकृत सीरीज क्रमशः स्थानीय वाहन सीरीजों $\mathsf{UP14B}$ के 119 वाहन, $\mathsf{UP14C}$ के 26 वाहन, UP14D के 4952 वाहन, UP14E के 6196 वाहन, UP14F के 6721 वाहन, UP14G के 8613 वाहन, UP14H के 7337 वाहन, UP14J के 8305 वाहन UP14K के 7893 वाहन, UP14L के 8435 वाहन, UP14M के 8068 वाहन UP14N के 6467 वाहन तथा अन्य जनपद सीरीजों के 318 वाहन एवं अन्य प्रांत सीरीजों वे 93 वाहन तथा अन्य स्थानीय सीरीजों के 483 वाहन एवं उपरोक्तानुसार सम्मिलित रूप से कुल 74026 वाहनों (जिन निजी वाहनों की एन0ओ0सी0 पूर्व में इस कार्यालय से अन्यत्र जनपदों/राज्य को भेजी जा चुकी हैं, को छोड़कर) का पंजीयन विज्ञप्ति दिनांक 07.01.2021 से छः मास के लिये नेलम्बित किया गया था। उक्त समयावधि दिनांक 07.07.2021 को पूर्ण हो चुकी है। मोटरगाड़ी अधिनियम 1988 की धारा-54 के अंतर्गत यह व्यवस्था निहित है कि किसी वाहन के पंजीयन का .निलम्बन लगातार छः माह तक रहने की स्थिति में वाहन का पंजीयन, पंजीयन अधिकारी द्वारा निरस्त किया जा सकता है।

एतद्द्वारा मैं, विश्वजीत प्रताप सिंह, पंजीयन अधिकारी/सहायक सम्भागीय परिवहन अधिकारी (प्रशासन), गाजियाबाद मोटरगाड़ी अधिनियम 1988 की धारा-54 में प्रदत्त अधिकारों का प्रयोग करते हुए गाजियाबाद जनपद में पंजीकृत ऐसे सभी यान (गैर-परिवहन यान) जिनकी पंजीयन दिनांक 01.01.1995 से दिनांक 30.06.2001 तक है एवं जिनकी पंजीकृत सीरीज क्रमशः स्थानीय वाहन सीरीजों UP14B के 119 वाहन, UP14C के 26 वाहन, UP14D के 4951 वाहन UP14E के 6196 वाहन, UP14F के 6721 वाहन, UP14G के 8612 वाहन, UP14H के 7337 वाहन, UP14J के 8305 वाहन UP14K के 7893 वाहन, UP14L के 8435 वाहन, UP14M के 8066 वाहन, UP14N के 6467 वाहन तथ .अन्य जनपद सीरीजों के 318 वाहन एवं अन्य प्रांत सीरीजों के 93 वाहन तथा अन्य स्थानीय सीरीजों .के 482 वाहन एवं उपरोक्तानुसार सम्मिलित रूप से कुल 74021 वाहनों (जिन निजी वाहनों की एन0ओ0सी0 पर्व में इस कार्यालय से अन्यत्र जनपदों/राज्यों को भेजी जा चकी हैं. को छोडकर` .का पंजीयन आज दिनांक 08.07.2021 को तत्काल प्रभाव से निरस्त करता हूं।
