Sensex, Nifty hit record highs as ONGC, Pfizer shares climb

New Delhi Domestic shares market indices on Monday hit record highs as a result of gains in Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) and Pfizer’s Indian arm.ONGC shares climbed over four per cent after the company’s overseas investment arm, ONGC Videsh Ltd., significant oil discovery in an onshore block in Columbia. At 9:24 am, S&P BSE Sensex was up 0.17 per cent at 45,157.33, while NSE Nifty 50 was up 0.19 per cent to 13,283.15. It is worth mentioning that both benchmark indexes have registered gains for five straight weeks on hopes of early Covid-19 vaccine availability for the public.Besides ONGC, Pfizer’s Indian arm also rose as much as 2.5 per cent in early trade after a top government health adviser said the US drugmaker has applied for emergency authorisation of its Covid-19 vaccine in India. However, the markets were dragged down by the performance of HDFC Bank. Its stock dropped 1.8 per cent to its lowest since midNovember and was the biggst drag on the indexes.The reason behind HDFC’s stock market decline could be the recent Reserve Bank of India order, asking the private lender to temporarily stop sourcing of new credit card customers and launching digital businesses due to outages in the bank’s internet and mobile banking systems.Asian markets were also trading lower after news agency Reuters reported that the US was preparing to impose sanctions on some Chinese officials over their alleged role in Beijing’s disqualification of elected opposition legislators in Hong Kong.
