Bengaluru, August 17 Rishi Pardal has taken over as the MD of United Breweries (UB) at a time when the industry is facing a multitude of challenges because of the pandemic. In an interview with BusinessLine, Pardal spoke about how the company plans to navigate through these difficult times. Excerpts:

You are taking over UB at a time when the industry is

Hyderabad, August 17 Pharmaceuticals and biologics company Biological E Ltd (BE) has acquired Akorn India Ltd, a subsidiary of US-based Akorn Inc, for an undisclosed

sum. "We are happy to have made a strategic investment in acquiring Akorn India," Mahima Datla, Managing Dir-

ector, BE, said in a release issued on Monday. "We will leverage BE's and Akorn India's capabilities to enhance our supply capacities both in vaccines and in generic injectables. The timing of

this acquisition is fortuitous as it will immediately allow us to expand our capacity to manufacture our investigational Covid-19 vaccine."

"With these capacities, we would be in a position to offer over 1 billion doses per annum," she added.

The deal will help Hydera-

bad-based BE, which manufactures specialty generic injectable medicines and

vaccines, enhance its manufacturing capabilities and capacities, the release said.

August 17 The UK government's bailout talks with Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and Tata Steel Ltd recently broke off, the Financial Times reported, citing people it didn't identify.

Talks between the UK's Treasury and the companies, both owned by Mumbaibased Tata Group, came to a halt after the government concluded the Indian multinational was sufficiently financed and didn't qualify for taxpayer support, according to the report.

JLR also baulked at the stringent conditions tied to any lending, including decarbonisation requirements pushing electric vehicles.

Private financing

The failure to reach a deal likely leaves the companies reliant on private financing to weather the economic downturn. Both businesses remain in talks with the government on other areas of potential supportlike tax breaks, which could extend to state loans in the case of Tata Steel, the FT said.

The Treasury told the paper it did not comment on individual firms.

Meanwhile, according to a PTI report, Tata Motors has denied reports of a plan to sell its stake in JLR.

Speth's 30% pay hike

Separately, the Times reported that the pay of outgoing JLR chief Ralf Speth has risen 30 per cent on last year to £4.44 million ($5.8 million). "That's at the same time as the company increased its cost-cutting target to £2.5 billion and cut thousands of jobs. His total earnings for the past four years came to £18 million pounds,"it said.

Among the top 16 tourism markets in the world, India is at the third last place in hotel bookings recovery for the week ended August 9, 2020, compared to the same week last year. However, in terms of weekly average recovery rate between week 22 and week 32 of 2020, India is at the abso-

lute bottom. This challenging trend is expected to continue as the traveller sentiment remains weak,withCovid-19 spreading in tourist centres such as Goa, Rajasthan, the North-East and Karnataka.

Globally, the US (67 per cent),China (66per cent),Ger-

Canada (41 per cent) have witnessed strong recovery in the same period as restrictions ease in these countries and they move towards normalcy. India registered a 3 per cent recovery in week 22 of 2020 (May 25-31), slowly rising to 12 per cent in week 27 (June 29-

July 5) and 20 per centin week 32 (August 3-9).

These are some of the key trends observed by RateGain, nology provider that offers a suite of SaaS based products to hotels, online travel agencies, airlines and car rental firms, among others. In India, while the week

When Kaushik Khona took over as the chief executive officer of GoAir in summer of 2009, the airline had barely six aircraft and limited operations. A few months earlier, GoAir had introduced a business class product (the first for an Indian no-frills airline) and attractive fares to lure flyers. But customer confidence remained low owing to the high rate of flight cancellations. Khona, who had been a vice president in the Wadia groupbeforethisappointment, steadied the ship, improved the aircraft utilisationand expanded the airline'snetwork with a focus on mini metros and tier II cities. When he leftthe airline in 2011, it wasinmuchbettershape,havingclocked 61 and 7 per cent growthinrevenue and netprofit, respectively,inFY'11.

Khona's abilities will be put to test againashebeginsasecondinningsatthe Wadia group airline. The airline press releaseonFridaydescribedhimasaturnaroundspecialist andaqualifiedresolution professional. In the past 12 years, Khona turned around the operations of DunlopTyresandrestructuredarenewableenergyandshippingventurebefore taking up a consulting role in Talati & TalatiLLP,the airline said.

Khona's secondinningsatGoAirwill be more challenging than the first. Globally,theaviationindustryis indeep distress because of the pandemic. Domesticairtrafficisdown82percenton a year-on-year basis and the industrywideloadfactor is50-55percent.GoAir's load factor fell to 50.5 per cent in July from 57.9 per cent in June. Most other airlines operatedcargo-only flightsduring April-May to support revenue but GoAir failed to capitalise on the oppor-

tunity.Theairline reliedonathirdparty forcargohandlingandwasdevelopingits ownin-housecapabilitieswhenthepandemic struck. Against anindustry-wide capacity deployment of around 30 per cent of pre-Covid period, GoAir is operatingonlyat 10-12percentcapacity.The airline operates around 40 flights daily including charters.

Khona's challenge would be to shore up the airline's finances.Cash and bank balancehadhalvedto~72.5croresequentially in the June-end quarter and its credit rating downgraded in July, given the weak liquidity outlook. He will also have to negotiate with Airbus regarding scheduled aircraft deliveries given the changedbusinessoutlook.LastOctober, theairlinehadindicateditwouldinduct one aircraft a month. It has a fleet of 55 aircraft atpresent.

Motivatingtheworkforcewillalsobe essentialsincetheairlinehasputaround 70 per cent of its staff on leave without

pay since March. Several senior executives, too, have quit in recent weeks. "Otherairlineshavecut salariesandjobs buthavemanagedpublicperceptionbetter," saidanindustry expert.

"GoAir has taken a spreadsheet-drivenhard-lineapproachtosavecash.With no bailout or support coming from the government, the promoters probably believe that is the only way to save the airline," the industry expertpointedout. Thisalsoexplainswhytheairlineisoperating fewer flights than others. Insiders sayitisnotprudenttoaddflightsiftheairlineisunabletomakemoneyfromthem. TheJune-Septemberperiodisalsotraditionally a weak quarter for domestic aviation and executives are hoping for a demandrecoveryfromnextmonth.

Some believe that cash conservation alone will not help and the airline will havetofocusonoperationalefficiencies. Duringhisearliertenure,GoAir'saverage fleet utilisation had increased to over 14 hours a day, among the highest in the industry, and this helped it achieve economies of scale.

"KaushiktakingoverGoAirispossibly the most agile and aggressive step the Wadias could have taken; more so since Kaushik,unlikeanyoneelsebeforeinthe CEO role, knows the management and functioning DNA of the Wadia group extremely well," said Mark D Martin, founder&CEOofMartinConsultingLLC, an aviation consulting and safety firm.

His approach with GoAir centres on his powerful understanding of airline financials,P&Landrevenueandreturns, and this has worked extremely well for GoAir inthepast,he added.

Othersbelieveamerechangeinguard will not help GoAir ride the storm. "Kaushik's first tenure as GoAir's CEO wasgoodandwewishhimgoodluckfor the second tenure. His induction this timeisundersevereandchallengingcircumstances—mostofwhicharebeyond his control, especially recapitalisation," said Kapil Kaul, South AsiaCEO of aviation consultancy CAPA, in a statement.

The pandemic has been a watershed moment for India's edtech sector. Since March,Unacademyhasdoubledthenumber of active subscribers. The monthly watchtimehas reachedanall-timehighof over 1 billionminutes.

Unacademyhasopeneduptheplatform to schools and colleges to conduct live classes without any interruptions. The Bengaluru-based start-up was founded by GauravMunjal,RomanSaini,andHemesh Singhin2015,initiallyonYouTubein2010. Accordingtoindustryinsiders,bigtech companies including Facebook, Google and Microsoft are eyeing investments in these start-ups.

Social media giant Facebook has already placed its bet on Unacademy. It participatedina $110-millioninvestment roundinFebruary.The round,whichwas ledbyGeneralAtlantic,alsodrewfunding from Sequoia India, Nexus Venture Partners, Steadview Capital and Blume Ventures.Flipkart'sCEOKalyan Krishnamurthy and Udaan co-founder Sujeet Kumar also participated in the round, whichaccordingtosources,gave the company a post-money valuationof $510million. Unacademy is now in talks with Japan's SoftBank and other investors to raise$200million,valuingthecompanyat $1.2 billion.

Pahwa of EY said there is a groundswell of support for online education fuelledbypenetrationinto"Bharat" (small towns and rural India). "Edtechcompaniesaremore agile and can adapt to the fast-changingenvironment," he pointed out.

One such fast-growing company is Vedantu, which provides live tutoring with some of the best-curated teachers. In July, it raised $100 million from US-based investmentfirmCoatuewith participation from existing investors. With this round, the Bengaluru-based firm's valuation jumped to $600 million,makingitthesecond most-valued company in Indian edtech.

Urban India has more salaried jobs than rural India. Of the 86 million salariedjobs inIndia in2019-20, 58per cent were in urban India and 42 per centinruralIndia. Joblosses are alsoin

Loss of these urban salaried jobs is, therefore, likely to have a particularly debilitating impact onthe economy, besides causing immediate hardship to middleclass households.

Financial statements for the quarter ended June 2020 of 1,560 companies were available in

CMIE's Prowess database as ofthe lastweekend.This is about a third of all companies thatusuallyprovide such data every quarter. Usually, such data becomes available for all companies within 45 days of the end of the quarter, which would have been by

Whatis revealing in this data is the stark differences between industries. A caveatbeforewediscuss these is that these are stillpreliminary results anda better picture will emerge only after a month. Nevertheless, these results indicate a pattern thatis worth noting even with these preliminary data.

Banks saw a 16.6 per cent increase in their wage bill and securities broking companies saw a 13.5 per cent increase in theirs but manufacturing companies sawa 7 per centfallintheir wage bill. The services sector was a mixed bag.
