Lithium Derivatives Market
Current Lithium Future Exchanges
| Products | Exchanges |
|---|---|
| Lithium Hydroxide | |
| Lithium Carbonate | |
| (by 2023) |
- Lithium futures market has been gathering momentum amid EV battery materials boom.
- The aim is to minimize risks from extreme price volatility in emerging markets.
- A shift toward independent market reference pricing is evolving, leading to greater price sophistication.
- Producers can use forward contracts to secure income and protect profit. OEMs can guarantee purchase prices in advance.
- An understanding of the current forward price curve assists in determining the future demand
- More financial institutions entering into the battery metals industry, helps to hedge exposure from lending for new greenfield projects or expansions, or to express views on the directions of the market. This helps justifying capex and securing financing.

Lithium Derivatives Market
Lithium Aggregate Open Interest1 (09/2022-04/2023)

- Price volatility has driven record liquidity in battery raw material exchanges ytd 2023.
- CME lithium hydroxide record volume came almost one year after the launch last April (monthly volume of Mar 2023 at 521t).
- Open interest on exchange increased by 34% since the start of April 2023, particularly longer dated tenors (Q3-23 and H1-2024) have seen an increase in open interest.
- Greater activity not only in the broker market but also on screen, currently with offers in April to September 2023. This is usually another sign of a market maturing.
