Petrology & Geological Interpretation
During the June quarter, Lawson Gold Limited (ASX:LSN “Lawson Gold”) conducted petrology studies on diamond core holes drilled during December 2010 at the Lawson Gold Project located approximately 20km north of Kanowna near Kalgoorlie, Western Australia (refer Figure 1).
The petrology studies determined the host rock type and mineralogical assemblages for the gold mineralisation and enabled relogging of previous drill holes (from residual drill cuttings) and reinterpretation of the geological setting for gold mineralisation at the Lawsons and Tyrells Prospects. These new interpretations will be used to plan future RC or Diamond drilling on these prospects.
Soil Geochemical Review
An expert geochemical consultant, Nigel Brand – Geochemical Services Pty Ltd, conducted a review and interpretation of all previous and recent soil sampling results for E27/345, E27/432 & M27/262, 264 & 265. The objectives of this work were to normalise results from previous geochemical surveys that used different collection methods, sampled materials and assay techniques. Thereby, the assay results could be compared by statistical analysis on an “apples to apples” basis in order to identify and prioritise soil gold anomalies and new exploration targets*.
Based on the geochemical review, follow-up soil sampling and geological mapping was completed over selected soil gold anomalies to define their extent and relationship to possible gold mineralisation. Geological interpretation and recommended follow-up work programs are pending.
Geophysical Interpretation:
A geological and structural interpretation of open file aeromagnetic data is being conducted by Southern Geoscience Consultants. The objectives of this work are to establish a structural framework (faults and shear zones) that may have acted as conduits and controls to the site of gold mineralisation. The objective is also, to compare the fault structures on Lawson Gold’s tenements with nearby gold deposits including Kanowna Belle, Mulgarrie, Gordon – Sirdar, Lyndsays Find etc.
A main outcome from the geophysical interpretation will be to identify new exploration targets for gold mineralisation. The final report is expected in early August.
Target Generation:
Results from the geochemical review and geophysical interpretation will be compared and combined in order to define and prioritise new gold exploration targets.
Aircore, RAB and/or RC drilling programs will be proposed to test these targets during the 2[nd] half 2011.
Exploration planned for the September quarter includes:
-
Planning and/or conducting soil sampling of additional new gold exploration targets* generated by interpretation of aeromagnetic geophysical surveys (due early August).
-
Planning for Aircore and/or RAB drilling of new gold exploration targets* including completion of Aboriginal heritage surveys and approval of Program of Works (POW’s) by the Department of Mines & Petroleum
-
Qualify controls on gold mineralisation, establish exploration criteria and identify additional drilling targets based on revised geological interpretation.
-
Progress towards granting the applications for Prospecting Licenses 27/2075-2078 to allow for initial reconnaissance exploration including auger soil sampling and/or RAB drilling (dependant on depth of cover)
About Lawson Gold Limited:
Kanowna district-focused Lawson Gold listed via a $4.7 million IPO in August 2010 with plans to advance gold exploration on tenements located approximately 20kms north of Barrick Gold’s 280,000 oz pa Kanowna Belle gold mine.
The Lawson Gold Project area covers an 8km strike length of Archaean ultramafic, mafic, intermediate volcanoclastic and sedimentary rock stratigraphy. Current work is focused on systematic gold exploration of all tenements in order to rapidly evaluate the potential of the project area to contain a significant gold deposit* (nominally >500,000 ounces). Exploration methods include surface soil sampling, geological mapping and sampling , RAB drilling and RC & Diamond drilling.
The Board continues to seek opportunities to expand the portfolio of exploration tenements with a continuing focus on gold, copper and potentially base metals.
Exploration History
Despite numerous gold discoveries in the region in the 1800s and early 1900’s, the initial discovery hole for the Kanowna Belle gold deposit was not drilled until 1989 and the first resource estimate in 1991.
At the Lawson Gold project area, there has been no comprehensive systematic gold-focused exploration.
Previous work by Mt Kersey Mining (1990-99) and Mithril Resources (2005-09) focused predominantly on nickel. Often gold analysis was limited to bottom of hole samples which can underestimate or overlook gold potential.
The best gold intersection reported by Mt Kersey of 4m @ 8.58g/t Au was from 44m depth. Of five shallow holes drilled by NiQuest Limited in 2004-5 (now Ferraus Limited), four drill holes returned anomalous gold and in hole ESR054 the last 5 metres in a 77 metre deep hole returned 18.22 g/t gold before drilling stopped.
Recent diamond drilling at the Lawsons Gold Prospect contained significant results including a high grade gold intersection of 3metres @ 37.2 g/t Au and a broad zone of gold mineralisation of 12metres @ 1.1g/t Au.
Gold mineralisation is associated with highly altered, quartz veined & brecciated volcanoclastic & feldspar porphyry intrusive rocks. Similar styles of gold mineralisation occur at the nearby Gordon-Sirdar, Mulgarrie and Kanowna Belle mining centres.
Exploration results to date provide encouragement for ongoing exploration of the Lawson Gold Project area.

Competent Persons Statement:
The exploration results reported here are based on information compiled by David Turvey (BSc. Hons) who is a member of the Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and who is a Director of Lawson Gold Limited. He has sufficient experience relevant to the style of mineralisation and the type of deposit under consideration, and to the activity which he is undertaking, to qualify as a Competent Person as defined in the “Australasian Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves, The JORC Code 2004 Edition”. He consents to the inclusion in this announcement on the information compiled by him in the form and context in which it appears.
- Lawson Gold Limited has not yet reported Mineral Resources from exploration of targets or named prospects on its project area. Any discussion in relation to exploration potential or targets or potential gold mineralisation is only conceptual in nature and it is uncertain if further exploration will result in determination of a Mineral Resource.
