Funkwerk AG steps up successful internationalisation
New contracts for passenger information systems
– Innovative system for Russian railway
– New ÖBB framework contract for LCD displays
Kölleda, 23 May 2012 – Funkwerk AG further consolidates its market position in Traffic & Control Communication (TCC) securing two important new contracts for passenger information systems on the international front. Focused currently on strategic reorientation, the company has primarily intensified its business in foreign markets making notable progress with these latest orders from Russia and Austria. The new passenger information systems feature innovative, energy-saving displays to ensure low life cycle costs. This was a key factor enabling Funkwerk to prevail against tough competition.
Russia's national railway company has appointed Funkwerk to supply and commission its passenger information system at Vladivostok station. The relevant system involves innovative technology, yet remains exceptionally cost-efficient. It adds to a notably higher level of automated passenger information, which will in future be provided using high-end LCD and TFT displays. The new passenger information system will be delivered before the end of summer. Funkwerk has already installed a comparable system at the Russian railway station in Kursky, which proved a decisive factor in winning the recent contract.
In similar ways, Funkwerk was able to strengthen its market position in Austria, where it received a framework contract from Austria's national railway company, ÖBB, for the supply of new platform indicators with LCD technology. The contract involves around 160 train destination displays for ÖBB stations to be supplied by 2015. The new platform indicators with high-definition LCD panels provide information on train arrivals and departures, but can also be used where necessary for free text such as the notification of platform changes, construction work, delays, etc. The indicators are controlled using Funkwerk's management system AURIS, which has already been used in many other projects.
Funkwerk has focused its TCC segment on high-end system solutions for rail and transport operators. In Germany, the company now holds a share of around 50 per cent in the market for station display and announcement systems. As the market in Western Europe is also characterised by a high level of equipment, the further internationalisation of operations has become a key strategic priority for Funkwerk. The value of these latest contracts, which confirm the success of recent corporate measures, is said to be in the mid single-digit range.
