Traffic statistics for 2010 show a total of 19,691,206 passengers handled by Vienna International Airport. This figure not only represents an increase of 8.7% over the previous year, but is also more than double the European average.
‘Vienna International Airport recorded strong traffic growth during the past year and nearly matched the level before the economic crisis. 2011 will be an important year for us: We want to improve our service relationships with our customers and partners and also continue the development of the non-aviation business. In addition, we intend to focus our efforts on completing the terminal extension Skylink. Our goal is to become the best airport in the region and to significantly expand our role as a competitive gateway to Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Asia,’ commented Christoph Herbst, Chairman of the Management Board of Flughafen Wien AG.
Passenger traffic to the Middle East and Eastern Europe rose by 10.5% and 13.8%, respectively. Maximum take-off weight (MTOW) increased 9.9%, flight movements by 1.1%, and cargo (incl. trucking) by 16.5%. In spite of the substantial growth in passenger volume during 2010, Vienna remains one of the most punctual airports in Europe, ranking ahead of the Lufthansa hubs in Munich, Zurich and Frankfurt in international comparison.
Top destinations in 2010: Western Europe – Frankfurt, Eastern Europe – Moscow, Long-haul routes – Bangkok
Vienna International Airport handled 19,691,206 passengers on 246,146 take-offs and landings in 2010. The highest share of passengers in the scheduled traffic segment was recorded by Frankfurt with 479,450 passengers, followed by London with 452,816 passengers and Zurich with 390,369 passengers. The ranking for Eastern Europe shows Moscow with 235,286 passengers ahead of Bucharest with 186,132 and Sofia with 143,305. The most passengers on long-haul flights were recorded by Bangkok with 106,989, followed by Tokyo with 84,670 and New York with 81,350. In 2010 Vienna International Airport offered direct connections to a total of 172 destinations throughout the world.
Austrian Airlines Group with the largest share of passengers
A ranking of the airlines by the number of passengers carried is led by the Austrian Airlines Group with 50.9%, followed by NIKI with 10.8%, Air Berlin with 7.1% and Lufthansa with 4.7%. The average seat occupancy (charter and scheduled flights) rose from 68.7% in 2009 to 68.9%. Seventy airlines included Vienna in their flight plans during 2010; new airline customers were Alitalia, British Midland, China Southern Airlines and Wataniya Airlines.
Strong growth in cargo volume
Cargo turnover at Vienna International Airport rose by 16.5% year-on-year to 295,989 tonnes. Air cargo increased 18.1% to 219,334 tonnes, while trucking was 12.3% higher at 76,655 tonnes.
Results of international investments
Malta Airport handled 3,293,527 passengers in 2010, which represents an increase of 12.8% over the previous year. Friedrichshafen Airport handled 590,640 passengers, for a plus of 2.1%. Košice Airport recorded a 24.3% drop in passenger volume below the prior year to 266,858 passengers in 2010.
Outlook
The change in the Management Board as of 1 January 2011 also led to a shift in the areas of responsibility of the individual board members, which is subject to the approval of the Supervisory Board: Gerhard Schmid, member of the Management Board, is now responsible for the Aviation and Handling Segments as well as the technical areas of the company. Ernest Gabmann, member of the Management Board, is in charge of the Non-Aviation Segment (retail and property development) and general construction projects. Christoph Herbst, chairman of the Management Board, is responsible for finance as well as the Skylink, personnel, strategy, and communications; he also serves as the speaker of the Management Board.
For 2011 Flughafen Wien AG is forecasting growth of 5.0% in the number of passengers, 3.0% in maximum take-off weight (MTOW) and 2.0% in flight movements.
