(DLR) has been looking for a suitable European manufacturer of space-flight capable power semiconductors. The related call for bids has been won by Lewicki micoelectronic GmbH (LME) of Oberdischingen near Ulm/Germany, a subsidiary of Silicon Sensor International AG. A project aimed at giving the company space-grade qualifications as an ‘establishment for assembly and testing to DLR specifications’ is to start this month, transfer to the European Space Component Committee (ESCC, formerly ESA) is planned. The decisive factors in accepting Lewicki’s bid were an accepted expertise in handling the packaging technology, and particularly hermetic casings, and a wealth of experience in aviation and space projects. As instructed by DLR, LME will qualify as a manufacturer of space-approved power semiconductor components over the next three years. The company may then sell its own parts on the high-end market for space engineering, greatly strengthening its position as a supplier of highly reliable hybrid circuits and components.
