Hornet-1 flows at over two million cubic feet per day
Orca Energy Limited (ASX: OGY, Orca) is pleased to announce that gas is flowing to surface at the Hornet-1 unconventional gas exploration well at a rate of more than two million cubic feet per day (MMscf/d) during clean up and flow back activities.
Hornet-1 is located in the southern Cooper Basin permit PEL 115 (OGY 20%; Senex Energy Ltd (ASX: SXY) - 80%) on the western flank of the Mettika Embayment (Figure 2).
Orca’s JV partner and operator, Senex Energy, completed a multi-zone fracture stimulation of Hornet-1 in March with the well stimulated over the interval 2,484 metres to 2,678 metres, targeting the tight gas sands of the Patchawarra Formation.

Hornet-1 is the second unconventional gas well successfully fracture stimulated in PEL 115 in the past month. Along with Kingston Rule-1, both have flowed gas to surface at constrained rates.

Orca’s Managing Director Greg Bandy commented, “ We are delighted with the success of both our unconventional gas wells so far. Confirmation of the gas bearing nature of these tight sands is the first step in unlocking the ultimate value Orca believes exists in PEL 115. ”
Victoria Petroleum drilled Hornet-1 in 2004 and gas shows were observed in the Epsilon and Patchawarra Formations with gross calculated gas-bearing sandstones of 56 metres. Two drill stem tests were conducted on this well and resulted in gas flowing to surface.
Senex Energy’s Managing Director Ian Davies said, “ Our exploration work to date confirms that the southern Cooper Basin could hold a massive new gas resource. We are moving quickly to capitalise on that potential. ”
