EnviTec Biogas is building plants for EUR 30 million in Belgium:
Leadership in Europe expanded
Lohne, April 8, 2008 – EnviTec Biogas AG [ISIN: DE000A0MVLS8, WKN: A0MVLS]
has won several contracts for the construction of biogas plants in Belgium.
The company will build biogas plants with a total electrical connected load
of 12.6 megawatts (mw) for several agricultural and industrial companies as
well as financial investors. The contracts for the one to three mw plants
have a total volume of approx. EUR 30 million, which will be reflected in
2008 sales. This represents an important step in the internationalisation
strategy of the company based in Lohne, Lower Saxony, Germany. EnviTec
Biogas’ orders on hand currently amount to EUR 133 million.
One of the Belgian customers is LMV Investments, which is based in Schilde
near Antwerp. The company invests in biogas projects in the Benelux
countries under the name of 'Bioenergie Belgien'.
What distinguishes the plants from other biogas plants is the fact that
they are not fed primarily with renewable resources but with residues such
as manure, glycerine, food waste and vegetable fats. The basis for this is
provided by the excellent conditions prevailing in Belgium, where a
variable remuneration exists which is largely independent of the type of
input materials used. Only in the Flemish part of the country, 60 percent
of the input materials must come from the agricultural sector, while the
rest may be supplied by the industrial sector. This gives the plant
operators much greater flexibility in choosing their input materials and
allows them to respond swiftly to rising prices for renewable resources.
Says Olaf von Lehmden, CEO of EnviTec Biogas: 'These projects ideally
illustrate the flexibility of biogas production. Waste that would otherwise
have to be disposed of at a significant cost is used by these biogas plants
for the production of energy.'
Apart from feeding electricity into the grid, these plants have concepts
for the utilisation of the exhaust heat and the processing of fermentation
residues. Due to the oversupply of liquid manure in the Flemish part of the
country, each plant is obliged by law to process the fermentation residues.
After being processed, the residues can more easily be stored, transported
and sold as fertiliser. EnviTec prefers a certain percentage of liquid
manure, which increases the operating and calculation certainty. In
Belgium, the remuneration for biogas consists of a feed-in compensation,
which differs between the individual regions, and certificates. The more
energy-efficient and ecological the biogas plants, the more efficient and
economical their operation.
With numerous new joint ventures and branches established in foreign
markets in the past year - EnviTec Biogas today operates in more than 15
countries – exports are becoming an important activity of the company. In
February, for instance, the company already reported that it had won a 30
mw contract in India, where the company is part of a consortium whose task
is to improve the supply security in the agricultural state of Punjab. The
generation of electricity from biogas is part of a 160 mw renewable energy
project. The positive international development is expected to continue in
the coming months and should make a growing contribution to the Group’s
total sales.
