Egide is now a member of the SIMCLAIRS European Defense Program

Egide, which specializes in hermetically sealed packages that protect and allow electronic and photonic chips to interconnect, is proud to announce that it has been chosen to participate in the Anglo-Franco-Swedish SIMCLAIRS (Studies for Integrated Multifunction Compact Lightwave Airborne Radars and Systems) defense program initiated by the European Defense Agency.

HTCC ceramics - a key element in airborne systems of the future

As a member of this program led by Thales Systèmes Aéroportés, Egide will develop packaging that uses HTCC (High Temperature Cofired Ceramic), one of the group's main products. This will protect the Gallium Nitride (GaN) chips which will be at the core of the on-board power amplification.

Gallium nitride is an outstanding material but one which needs failure proof protection.

More and more electronic chips use Gallium Nitride as a base material as this III-V compound, when compared with other materials, ensures better performance in terms of higher power and/or higher frequencies so its use is growing in defense and civilian fields where high performance is required. According to Philippe Brégi, the CEO of Egide, "Gallium Nitride is the material of choice for the future but, like all III-V compounds, its intrinsic fragility requires it to be hermetically packaged when used in critical applications. By taking part in the SIMCLAIRS program Egide is showing that it leader in High Tech and High Rel applications."

Egide SA and its American subsidiary Egide USA are very active in the military and space sectors and these accounted for 47% of the Group's sales in the first half of 2011.

Critical electrical components used in all major military programs need to be protected and almost always need hermetically sealed packages such as that supplied by Egide and there are very few manufacturers worldwide able to manufacture these components. By positioning itself at the high end of the market, Egide is able to provide solutions to many problems in the defense field where miniaturization, high tech, high power and reliability are required.
