Die Eckert & Ziegler Strahlen- und Medizintechnik AG (WKN 565 970) hat mit einem der führenden deutschen Behand- lungszentren einen Kooperationsvertrag über die schonende Behand- lung von Prostatakrebs mittels schwach radioaktiver Strahlenquellen abgeschlossen. Durch die Zusammenarbeit mit dem Ambulanten Ope- rationszentrum im Ullsteinhaus GmbH, Berlin, will der Pankower Her- steller von miniaturisierten Permanentimplantaten und Operationse- quipment seinen engen Kontakt zu Ärzten festigen und Beratungs- und Schulungskapazitäten für die weitere Expansion aufbauen. In dem im Berliner Stadtteil Tempelhof ansässigen Zentrum sollen internationale Operationsteams künftig über das Verfahren, die Handhabung und die Produkte der Eckert & Ziegler AG ausgebildet werden. “Die Behandlung von Prostatakarzinomen mit miniaturisierten, schwach radioaktiven Quellen gilt als besonders schonend und hat sich in den Vereinigten Staaten bereits zur Standardmethode für frühe For- men dieser Krankheit entwickelt”, erklärte Dr. Gunnar Mann, Ge- schäftsführer der federführenden Eckert & Ziegler-Tochter BEBIG Isotopen- und Medizintechnik GmbH. “Der Vorteil der sogenannten Permanentimplantation liegt darin, dass bei der Operation Harnröhre und Nervenstränge nur eine geringe Strahlendosis erhalten und somit typische Nebenwirkungen wie Inkontinenz und Impotenz deutlich re- duziert werden. Da das Verfahren ambulant durchführbar ist, entfällt zudem der Krankenhausaufenthalt, was zu wesentlich geringeren Ge- samtbehandlungskosten führt.” In Deutschland ist das Verfahren noch wenig bekannt und wird daher von Krankenkassen nur auf Antrag fi- nanziert. Das Ambulante Operationszentrum im Ullsteinhaus GmbH ist eines der ersten Zentren in Deutschland, an denen das Verfahren ambulant ange- boten wird. Es wurde im April vergangenen Jahres gegründet und ar- beitet ausschließlich mit Ärzten zusammen, die über eine langjährige Erfahrung bei der Brachytherapie verfügen. Das Berliner Operations- zentrum führt einen bedeutenden Anteil der in Deutschland stattfinden- den ambulanten Prostataoperationen durch. Für das Jahr 2001 rechnet das Tempelhofer Ärzteteam mit rund 100 Prostataoperationen, bei denen der Patient jeweils nur einen halben Tag in der Praxis bleibt. Eckert & Ziegler Strahlen- und Medizin- technik AG announces a cooperation with one of the leading German private centres for low morbidity treatment of prostate cancer with low activity sources, so-called brachytherapy. This collaboration with Am- bulantes Operationszentrum im Ullsteinhaus GmbH will consolidate the close contacts of the Berlin manufacturer of miniature radioactive sources (seeds) for permanent implants and positioning systems to the clinical community and enable the establishment of training facilities for Eckert & Ziegler’s further expansion. The centre which is situated in Tempelhof, a district of Berlin, will be used in the future to train natio- nal and international teams of doctors as well as medical staff in order to become proficient with the brachytherapy treatment, the handling and the products of Eckert & Ziegler. “The treatment of prostate cancer with low activity seeds is considered to be a low morbidity procedure and is currently becoming the stan- dard treatment for early stages of prostate cancer in the USA”, ex- plains Dr. Gunnar Mann, General Manager of Bebig GmbH, which is the subsidiary of Eckert & Ziegler in charge of the manufacturing and commercialisation of the seeds. “The advantage of permanent implan- tation is that the urethra and the erectile nerves are receiving low doses of irradiation, consequently typical side effects as incontinence and impotence are reduced. Since the treatment is normally an outpatient procedure, hospitalisation is not necessary thus decreasing general me- dical costs”. The treatment is not yet well known in Germany and is only reimbursed upon request by the Health Insurance. Ambulantes Operationszentrum im Ullsteinhaus GmbH is one of the first in Germany to have provided this outpatient procedure. The cen- tre was founded last year in April and the procedures are performed exclusively by highly trained and experienced doctors and medical staff. The Berlin based operation centre is performing a significant pro- portion of those prostate brachytherapy procedures, carried out as an outpatient procedure in Germany. The doctors at the centre are antici- pating about 100 procedures for the year 2001 for which each patient will only remain half a day in the centre.
