Kandala. Such an uncommon name. "It means 'golden' and indicates someone who has the properties of gold, such as beautiful, precious, rare," says Kandala Singh. The word is from Punjabi, her mother tongue.

A poet, Ms Singh lives in south Delhi's Munirka Enclave. It is a neighbourhood that "gives me plenty of fodder for poetry—interactions on the terrace with neighbours during lockdown, messages on the colony WhatsApp group, the Ashoka trees, the cacophonous chorus of birds twice a day."

In her 30s, she finished composing Birdwatching this month last year. She wrote the first draft in a single day but "went back and forth on this poem over the next four months, revising and editing, and re-revising with the inputs of a poetry partner."

She feels especially attached to this poem, for it touches upon the "emotional truths and contradictions" of domestic violence. Ms Singh is a survivor of gender violence who also works on gender issues as a researcher and activist.

"We don't always manage to make room for these nuances. Perpetrators of violence are often painted with an unidimensional lens. The lived experience of violence is far more complicated." Poetry can hold room for these contradictions, she believes.

Ms Singh agrees to share the poem with us, which first appeared in the US-based poetry journal Rust + Moth.

गुरुग्राम| कार्यालय संवाददाता महिला बैडमिंटन खिलाड़ी से छेड़छाड़ मामले में आरोपी के जानकार होने के शक में सोमवार को जीजा-साले समेत तीन युवकों का अपहरण कर लिया गया। सेक्टर-37 सी स्थित हैरिटेज बैडमिंटन अकादमी में बंधक बनाकर तीनों की बेरहमी से पिटाई की गई। इससे एक युवक की मौत हो गई।

कार से दो युवक उतरे और कहा कि तुम दोनों ने लड़की से छेड़छाड़ की है और ठेकेदार समेत दोनों को अगवा कर लिया। तीनों को सेक्टर-37सी स्थित हैरिटेज बैडमिंटन अकादमी ले जाकर बेरहमी से पीटा गया। तीनों की हालत देखकर आरोपी मौके से फरार हो गए। अनुज कुमार की वहीं पर मौत हो गई।

बाइक सवार ने खिलाड़ी से की थी छेड़छाड़

एसीपी अपराध प्रीतपाल सांगवान ने बताया कि महिला बैडमिंटन खिलाड़ी मूलरूप से दिल्ली की रहने वाली है। वह राष्ट्रीय स्तर की खिलाड़ी है। दसवीं की छात्रा है। नाबालिग खिलाड़ी ने बताया कि सोमवार को वह अभ्यास के लिए अकादमी जा रही थी। दोपहर में सेक्टर–37 चौक पर पहुंची तो बाइक सवार युवक ने उससे छेड़छाड़ की। खिलाड़ी ने पास में स्थित किसी कंपनी में जाकर पीछा कर उसे छुड़ाया । इसकी जानकारी उसने पिता को फोन दी । पिता के अकादमी में फोन किया और उसके बाद काले रंग की कार में दो युवक पहुंचे थे।

नई दिल्ली। खोरी गांव में अवैध निर्माण मामले में सप्रीम कोर्ट ने मंगलवार को कहा कि जिनके घर तोड़े गए हैं, उनके पुनर्वास के लिए सरकार जल्द कदम उठाए और प्रभावित नागरिकों की शिकायत का समाधान किया जाए।

जस्टिस एएम खनविल्कर की पीठ ने अस्थाई शेल्टरों में नोडल अफसर तैनात करने के आदेश दिए और फरीदाबाद निगमायुक्त से पुनर्वास प्रगति पर रिपोर्ट मांगी है। मामले में अगली सुनवाई 25 अगस्त को होगी। कोर्ट ने कहा जिनका पुनर्वास किया जाना है, उन्हें नया आवास मिलेगा, लेकिन जो इसके योग्य नहीं पाए गए हैं, उन्हें यह सुविधा क्यों मिले, क्योंकि ये जमीन कब्जाने वाले लोग हैं।

कोर्ट ने कहा सबसे पहले यहां के लोगों को तुरंत राहत देने की जरूरत है, ये भी देखना चाहिए कि क्या यहां प्रभावित लोगों की शिकायतों के लिए कोई नोडल अफसर तैनात किए जा सकते हैं।
