(1) The calculation of earnings per share is based on profit attributable
to shareholders of HK$2,966 million (1998: HK$2,808 million) and on
2,127,367,160 shares in issue throughout the year (1998: 2,127,367,160
shares in issue).

There is no dilution effect for the earnings per share.

(2) Operating profit of 1999 represents profit from consolidated
activities.

(3) Profit from consolidated activities of 1999 is before net finance
charges of HK$1,090 million (1998: HK$1,201 million).

(4) Certain comparative figures have been reclassified to conform with the
current presentation as required under Hong Kong SSAP 1 (revised)
"Presentation of financial statements".
