For Immediate Release

Cambi will improve solids treatment in Hawaii

Asker, Norway, 28 January 2024

Cambi has signed a major contract to supply a thermal hydrolysis process (THP) system to the City and County of Honolulu's Department of Environmental Services at the Honouliuli wastewater treatment plant.

Honouliuli is Oahu's second-largest wastewater treatment plant with a design capacity to process 51 million gallons, or 193,000 m3 of wastewater per day. The plant has been modernized with a secondary treatment step before deep ocean outfall and is now investing in modern thermal hydrolysis solids treatment before anaerobic digestion.

Thermal hydrolysis from Cambi will increase solids processing capacity for the existing digesters and accommodate the increasing solids volumes arising from the introduction of secondary treatment without the need to build two new digesters. The THP will also significantly increase biogas production and produce dryer biosolids providing volume reduction.

"Cambi is proud to be entrusted with this important project to improve the economics and environmental footprint of solids treatment in Oahu. We look forward to a fruitful cooperation with main contractor Hensel Phelps and the Department of Environmental Services in the coming years, to bring thermal hydrolysis to Hawaii on time and budget," said Cambi acting CEO Lars-Petter Traa.

The project is Cambi's 12th in the US. The THP system will be delivered to site in 2026, with operations scheduled to start in 2027.
