IEC announces Maiden JORC Resource for Malawi Nkhachira Project
Intra Energy Corporation Limited (ASX:IEC) (“Intra Energy” or “the Company”) is pleased to announce that it has completed a maiden JORC Resource Estimate for the Nkhachira Project, which lies within ML143/2005 and EPL174/2005 tenements in northern Malawi. The Company operates the Malcoal Mine within ML143. Total coal resources are now reported at 38.4 million tonnes comprising 10.1 million tonnes Measured, 13.8 million tonnes Indicated and 14.4 million tonnes Inferred category coal. The table below presents a summary of coal resources by seam within the Nkhachira Project.
Estimates were prepared in accordance with the “Australian Guidelines for the Estimating and Reporting of Inventory Coal, Coal Resources and Coal Reserves” (March 2003). Resources are reported in compliance with the Joint Ore Reserves Committee’s “Australasian Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves ~ The JORC Code ~ 2004 Edition”.
Nkhachira JORC Resources
| Seam | Measured | Indicated | Inferred | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| K300 | 934,433 | 1,252,749 | 1,280,995 | 3,468,177 |
| K200 | 2,214,247 | 2,376,869 | 2,379,650 | 6,970,766 |
| K100 | 6,992,972 | 10,211,263 | 10,754,141 | 27,958,376 |
| Total | 10,141,652 | 13,840,881 | 14,414,786 | 38,397,319 |
These resources add to the Company’s existing JORC resource portfolio in Malawi to bring the total JORC resources to 62.3 million tonnes, of which 13.6 million tonnes are Measured, 18.8 million tonnes Indicated and 29.9 million tonnes Inferred category coal. The Company has several other coal concessions in Malawi and ongoing exploration will result in further resources being brought to a JORC standard over the next year.

Nkhachira Location and Exploration
Intra Energy acquired the Nkhachira tenements in March 2013 covering a total area of 11.25sqkm. The licence area is located in the Kayerekela area of the Karonga District, northern region of Malawi approximately 30 kilometres southwest of Karonga on the western shore of Lake Malawi/Nyasa, and approximately 450 kilometres north of the capital of Malawi, Lilongwe.
Detailed geological mapping was carried out throughout the leases, commencing from the exposed seams in the Malcoal Mine, and following them along strike of the length of the lease. Outcrop and trench samples were collected and analysed.
Sixty four (64) holes have been drilled for a total of 2,437.2m core within the leases (NKD01 through to NKD64). Drilling was carried out using a Christianson CS10 rig by AAA Drilling, a subsidiary of Intra Energy. 523 core samples were collected from these holes and analyzed at laboratories in Malawi and Tanzania. A detailed topographic survey was carried out of the Nkhachira Deposit and DTM topographic maps were subsequently produced.

Geology of the Nkhachira Project
The Nkhachira Deposit is comprised of sediments belonging to the Karoo Super Group, which Is the largest sedimentary stratigraphic unit in southern Africa. The coal bearing sediments occur in the K2-K3 Formation and uncomformably overlie Precambrian basement rocks.
Strata dips in an easterly direction at between 10 and 25 degrees. Three coal horizons were identified at Nkhachira and named, in top down stratigraphic order, K300, K200 and K100. The table below describes the summary results on an air-dried basis from drillholes at Nkhachira.
| Inherent | |||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nkhachira | Thickness | Moisture | Ash | Calorific Value | RD | ||
| Seam | m | % | % | Kcals/kg | |||
| K300 | 0.65 | 3.4 | 22.5 | 5925 | 1.63 | ||
| K200 | 1.10 | 3.5 | 24.7 | 5805 | 1.67 | ||
| K100 | 3.65 | 3.0 | 23.4 | 5935 | 1.65 |
These seams are typically comprised of alternating bands of coal and carbonaceous materials of varying thicknesses resulting in an overall moderate to high ash content.
The sediments above the coal sequence are predominantly well consolidated, arkosic sandstones and interbanded mudstones. The sandstone forms a well-defined north-south trending topographic high, plunging to the north-northwest.
The maximum-modelled depth to any seam in the deposit is 150m. The Measured and Indicated resources all lie at shallow depths, with only some of the Inferred category at deeper depths. The seams are generally thicker and closer together in the south and thin and separate northwards. Therefore, a greater proportion of the total resource exists in the central-south part of the deposit. The seams are separated by interburden consisting carbonaceous mudstones, mudstones and sandstones.
Nkhachira Project Resources
Coal resources have been determined in a manner consistent with the “ Australian Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves ~ The JORC Code ~ 2004 Edition ” (the Code) and the associated 2003 edition of “ Australian Guidelines for Estimating and Reporting of Inventory Coal, Coal Resources and Coal Reserves” (the Guidelines) .
Gemcom’s Minex geological modelling software has been used to store data and to carry out geological modelling. Coal resources include all seams from subcrop to 150 metres depth. Combined total in situ coal resources for the Nkhachira Project are reported at 38.4 million tonnes for all JORC categories, with 24.0 million tonnes reporting to the Measured and Indicated status.

Intra Energy’s Executive Chairman and Managing Director, Mr. Graeme Robertson commented:
“IEC has now defined a sufficient quality and quantity of coal resources in Malawi to support its Pamodzi power project, and continues into the final stages of negotiation with the government of Malawi.”
