COMPANY ANNOUNCEMENT 19 AUGUST 2013
AUSTAL AWARDED FOURTH WIND FARM VESSEL CONTRACT
Austal Limited (Austal) (ASX:ASB) has been awarded its fourth contract to construct a wind farm support vessel for UK-based Turbine Transfers Limited.
The contract for a 21 metre catamaran is valued at approximately £2.3 million (A$3.9 million) and will be constructed at Austal’s Philippines shipyard over approximately nine months, with work to commence at the end of August.
It is the eighth vessel Austal has been contracted to build for Turbine Transfers and adds to the three 27 metre catamarans currently being constructed for the company at the Philippines shipyard, awarded in October 2012.
Austal was first awarded a contract by Turbine Transfers in July 2011 to build three 21 metre wind farm support vessels and was subsequently contracted in January 2012 to build a 27 metre advanced TriSWATH support vessel.
Austal Chief Executive Officer Andrew Bellamy said Austal was awarded the contract following the positive performance of the first three 21 metre craft and a specific request from one of Turbine Transfers customers for a 21 metre Austal Wind Express catamaran.
“The latest award demonstrates the close working relationship we have developed with Turbine Transfers and our ability to build vessels that meet their needs,” Mr Bellamy said.
“We continue to see opportunities in the wind farm vessel market and have the right production cost base in the Philippines to successfully leverage our intellectual property with a proven design.”
The new 21 metre catamaran will be used by Turbine Transfers to support wind turbine installation and maintenance activities in European waters. It will add to Turbine Transfers’ existing fleet of approximately 30 boats.
