COMPANY ANNOUNCEMENT 6 April 2009
ORDER FOR LARGE VEHICLE FERRY
Austal confirms an unconditional contract has been signed with a value of approximately AUD $106 million for the design and construction of one 107 metre high speed vehicle-passenger ferry with Maltese operator Virtu Ferries.
The contract is the second large high speed vehicle ferry order Austal has secured this month.
The vessel will be built by Austal’s Western Australian workforce and is scheduled for delivery in mid 2010.
Intended for operation between Malta and Italy, the vessel will join the existing Austal-built vehiclepassenger ferry “Maria Dolores”, which was delivered to Virtu Ferries in 2006.
Austal Managing Director Bob Browning commented;
“This contract adds momentum to Austal’s traditional commercial market, reinforcing the company’s commitment to delivering customised vessel solutions and to maintaining strong relationships with our existing customer base,” Mr Browning said.
“The staggered delivery of the two large vehicle ferries announced this month ensures a smooth, ongoing workload for our Western Australian facilities over the next few years,” Mr Browning said.
The 107 metre vessel will be Austal’s 24[th] commercial delivery to the Mediterranean region – which includes 14 large vehicle-passenger ferries - and follows the recent order of four inshore patrol boats for the Armed Forces of Malta.
The vessel will have the capacity to carry 800 passengers and 230 cars at a speed of approximately 39 knots.
