ASX/media announcement

Portland Orthopaedics hires top US hip and knee executive

27 August 2007, Sydney, Australia: Portland Orthopaedics Limited (ASX:PLD) has appointed orthopaedic marketing and sales specialist Mr Arthur H Mack to its pivotal role as vice president of sales and marketing in the US.

Mr Mack is moving from a very successful New York centred business in distributing orthopaedic implants. He has track record in building up distribution businesses and is particularly attracted to the existing US sales foothold and points of difference of Portland’s joint replacement products.

“Art Mack has led the sales/marketing teams at two established orthopaedic implant companies and has taken them to a significant market presence” said Portland’s managing director David Sekel. “He knows how to introduce modular orthopaedic products to the US market and get rapid sales and earnings uplift.”

“Portland will also use Art’s outstanding relationships with very important US orthopaedic surgeons to broaden and deepen sales penetration.”

“This is strategic timing as Portland exits the Plus Inc US distribution supply arrangement and takes control of its own distribution across the US regions.”

Since 2004 Mr Mack has owned his distribution business Integrity Medical Sales that served an exclusive contract for WRIGHT Medical Technology, an orthopaedic implant and biologic products company selling in New York City. He built and led a sales team and turned declining sales into sales growth expanding distribution to over 50 hospitals and over 100 surgeon accounts. He was also an integral sales executive with the very successful Joint Medical Products team who developed and later sold the S-Rom modular product portfolio to a J&J division.

Arthur Mack was educated in part by the US Air Force’s Medical Service Specialist Tech School. He has an undergraduate degree in business/marketing from the University of Maryland and has also undertaken executive and marketing courses at New York’s Columbia University.

Arthur Mack will report to John Green, Portland’s Michigan based Global Vice President of sales and marketing.

About Portland Orthopaedics : Listed on the ASX in December 2005, Portland (ASX:PLD) is a developer and manufacturer of specialist hip replacements. Portland’s first product, the DTC Hip, was conceived in 1991 as standard hip implants proved inadequate in cases with substantial bone loss especially where a hip implant had already been inserted. So far more than 2,000 implants have been sold, the majority in the US and Australia.

Portland has regulatory approval to sell a range of primary, revision and tumour hip replacement products in the US, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Israel. The core technologies are all patented and future applications include shoulders, ankles and other joints.
