Beta-Glucans – advanced wound care
- Enzymes molecular testing
- Summary
Woulgan® Biogel – advanced wound healing
- Unique product based on proprietary beta-glucans
- Advanced medical device; Class 3, Rule 13 – can argue for an ancillary medicinal product effect
- CE mark received last week
- Agreement with Smith & Nephew
collaboration
- Market evaluation trials commencing upon CE-mark
- Evaluation in limited number of centres across Europe
- Seeking to establish end-user efficacy in routine clinical setting
- Obtaining planning tools and parameters for commercial strategy
- Clarifying the basis for a long-term relationship with Smith & Nephew, who hold exclusive, non-transferable technology rights until end of trials
- Biotec BetaGlucans are also actively contacting opinion leaders and the professional wound healing market in general
- Promoting the product and obtaining information about the competitiveness and market potential
- Web-shop about to be launched

The SBG substance is well documented
The animal study in diabetic mice shows that the performance of the reformulated SBG product (Woulgan®) with proven stability and well above typical moister gels used for wound healing
Placebo controlled double blinded study of 60 patients Statistical significant after 8 weeks
Documented effect on diabetic ulcers, scope to be expanded to other advanced wound healing applications
Advanced classification enables claiming of medical effects in labels and marketing
• Supported by article publication in 2014 Journal of Diabetes
"Macrophage stimulating agent soluble yeast b-1,3/1,6-glucan as a topical treatment of diabetic foot and leg ulcers: A randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled phase II study"
- Shows clear beneficial effect of SBG treatment in healing of diabetic foot ulcers
- Ancillary claims offer a unique opportunity for a gel in the wound market
- Significantly more efficacious wound healing than gels without SBG or occlusive secondary dressings alone
- Modulates the immunological system by activating macrophages and other phagocytic cells having specific cell receptors for SBG, and supports the natural wound healing process within the wound bed
- Exercises biological effects in terms of increased wound contraction, while allowing increased influx of phagocytic cells to the wound bed
- Attracting and stimulating phagocytic cells in the wound has potential for reducing risk of contamination and microbial infection in the wound bed 7
First launch in Europe The European Market Opportunity
Market estimate of annual number of wounds
| Population | 571 mill | |
|---|---|---|
| # of Diabetic Foot Ulcer | 2.0 million | |
| # of Leg Ulcers | 0.9 million |
|
| # of Pressure Ulcers | 5.0 million | |
| # of burns | 1.0 million | |
| Europe is about 30% - 50% of world market, dependent on definitions |
Woulgan 8 ® - an advanced wound healing product for general use
Agenda
Business areas and Highlights
Beta-Glucans – advanced wound care
Enzymes – molecular testing
Summary
- Several well known cold adapted enzymes for use in molecular biology
- Unique heat inactivity features
- Used in PCR sample preparation
- Widely used by many research kit manufacturers
- Entering routine diagnostics through OEM agreements
- Customer base quickly expanding
Broadening the product base
- Shrimp Alkaline Phosphatase (SAP): has become one of today's most-selling DNA modifying enzymes due to the added convenience through a complete heat inactivation
- Cod Uracil-DNA Glycosylase (Cod UNG): from Atlantic Cod is the only commercially available UNG enzyme that is completely and irreversibly inactivated by moderate heat treatment.
- Nucleases originating from cold adapted marine organisms:
- dsDNase is double-strand DNA specific, especially useful in RNA or double-strand DNA clean-up applications
- HL-dsDNase is also heat-labile
- SAN is active at low temperatures and in high concentrations of salt, which makes it useful for applications where nucleic acids must be removed from samples
- HL-SAN is also heat-labile and will be launched later this year
Agreements with a number of the largest companies in the industry
