ARCADIS' STAFF ASSISTS WITH REBUILDING IN HAITI
October 21, 2010 – ARCADIS (EURONEXT: ARCAD), the international design, consulting, engineering and management services company, announced today that it will send a group of experts to Haiti to support UN-HABITAT, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, in the reconstruction effort following the January 2010 earthquake.
A sanitation expert has already arrived in Port-au-Prince in late September to participate in an international sanitation mission. This trip follows ARCADIS' five-person reconnaissance mission earlier in the month, which included urban planners, architects and experts in potable water along with representatives from UN-HABITAT. A third mission with ARCADIS experts in flood protection management and civil engineering is planned for November. In addition, an architect/urban planner will be stationed in Haiti to support the local UN-HABITAT team.
These missions are part of the ARCADIS Shelter program, a partnership program with UN-HABITAT, aimed at improving the quality of life in rapidly developing cities around the world. Through Shelter, ARCADIS commits its staff members and expertise to supporting UN-HABITAT initiatives, including establishing a program for sustainably rebuilding cities in Haiti.
"We're proud to have the opportunity to collaborate with UN-HABITAT. Our skill sets match with the needs of UN-HABITAT in Haiti, allowing us to provide the type of expertise to support the reconstruction effort," said Harrie Noy, Chief Executive Officer of ARCADIS.
About Shelter
UN-HABITAT, the United Nations Programme for Human Settlements, and ARCADIS, have launched a partnership aimed at a common goal: to improve the quality of life in rapidly growing cities around the world. Under this partnership program, ARCADIS commits its employees, expertise and skills to help bring the UN-HABITAT agenda forward. The program is supported by the Lovinklaan Foundation which is a major shareholder in ARCADIS with particular interest in supporting the development of ARCADIS employees."
Shelter—the basic protection against the elements or just a safe place—is something we all need to survive. But, in many parts of the world, a growing number of people are not able to fullfill this essential human need. That's why we have given our initiative the name 'Shelter', creating a platform to make our partnership visible and tangible.
