Alistair Currie appointed Group Chief Operating Officer

- integrated technology and operations delivery to accelerate strategy -

ANZ today announced the appointment of Alistair Currie to the role of Group Chief Operating Officer with responsibility for technology, shared services and operations including ANZ’s Bangalore, Manila and Chengdu hubs, property and major projects.

Reporting to ANZ Chief Executive Officer Mike Smith, Mr Currie will be responsible for accelerating delivery of ANZ’s super regional strategy through an integrated approach to the Group’s business transformation agenda in technology, shared services and operations. His appointment is effective from 15 October and is subject to completing the necessary regulatory approvals.

Mr Currie was previously Managing Director Transaction Banking in Institutional. He joined ANZ in 2008 from HSBC where he was President and Chief Executive Officer of HSBC Taiwan having previously held senior roles throughout Asia, the Middle East and the United States including Chief Operating Officer of Wells Fargo HSBC Trade Bank.

Chief Information Officer Anne Weatherston will report to Mr Currie and remain a member of ANZ’s Management Board reflecting the importance attached to Technology.

Mr Smith said: “We have established a clear technology strategy for the Group and we have a significant competitive advantage in our technology and operations hubs.

“This foundation now gives us the opportunity to change gear with our super regional strategy through an integrated approach between technology, shared services and operations that delivers value to customers more quickly and drives productivity gains.

“This new approach is also intended to put ANZ ahead of the curve by responding decisively to the more constrained environment for banks globally. Lower economic growth, deleveraging by consumers and business, and a greater regulatory burden require a new operating model and a new mindset throughout our business.

“Alistair is one of our most experienced international bankers with a track record in delivering business transformation outcomes and I’m very pleased to have him join ANZ’s Management Board,” Mr Smith said.

Chief Operating Officer David Cartwright, who has been responsible for Global Services and Operations, will leave ANZ to pursue the next stage of his career.

“I’d like to thank David for his contribution to ANZ. Under his leadership we have developed a new professionalism in operations, grown our hub in Bangalore and established new hubs in Manila and Chengdu. We wish him well,” Mr Smith said.
