ANZ appoints India and Taiwan Country CEOs

ANZ today announced the appointment of Subhas DeGamia to the role of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) India and Andrew Leong as CEO Taiwan.

Mr Leong will be responsible for continuing the growth of operations first established by ANZ almost three decades ago and contributing to ANZ’s Greater China growth strategy.

Mr Leong joins ANZ from Standard Chartered Bank where he was most recently Head of Global Markets and Co-head Wholesale Bank, Managing Director in Shanghai, China. Prior to this, he worked in markets roles in Hong Kong and Taipei with American Express and Chase Manhattan.

India is one of the key Asian growth markets and as CEO India, Mr DeGamia will be responsible for driving ANZ’s long term strategy to become a leading foreign bank. He has 20 years of international financial markets and investment banking experience in Australia, New Zealand, India and across Asia. He has worked with ANZ since 1989, including with the former ANZ Grindlays business in India.

Commenting on the appointments, ANZ Group Managing Director Asia Pacific, Mr Alex Thursby said: “Our goal for Asia Pacific is to contribute 20% of Group net profit after tax by 2012. These Country CEOs will develop and implement focused growth strategies that contribute toward this goal.

“Subhas and Andrew will strengthen the leadership team for our South and South East Asian and North East Asian businesses respectively. They are responsible for all of ANZ’s operations in these countries, as well as managing relationships with government and regulators.”

Both Country CEO appointments are subject to regulatory approval. Mr DeGamia commences in his new role in July and will report to Mr Thursby until the commencement of the CEO South and South East Asia. An appointment to this role is expected to be announced in the next couple of months.

Mr Leong is due to start with ANZ on 2 June and will report to CEO North East Asia Alistair Bulloch.
