Alstom announces the sale of its ring motors1 activities in Bilbao to ABB. In order to refocus on its core activities and be ready for further opportunities, Alstom has decided to concentrate its Bilbao site on activities directly related to hydropower. As part of the agreement with ABB, Alstom will relocate these activities to another site in Bilbao.
Alstom's Bilbao industrial facility, specialised in the production of generators for hydropower plants, is also a pre-assembly and logistics platform for hydro small & medium projects.
"The sale of the ring motors activity to ABB is the best solution to guarantee the future of this activity in Bilbao, said Alstom Renewable Power President, Jerôme Pécresse. "Alstom, as the global leader in hydropower energy, will focus on the growing hydropower market, strengthening its commitment to industrial development in the Basque region"
The Bilbao site produces hydro equipment for several projects. The site will notably supply part of the equipment for the Devoll River hydroelectric power plant in Albania. In Spain, Alstom has installed over 300 hydropower turbines and 2,000 generators, with a total installed capacity of 7 gigawatts, representing 40% of the total hydropower capacity in the country.

1 Ring motors are used in the mining industry as one of the pieces of a gearless mill drives for grinding raw materials. The 2012/13 turnover of this activity was €57 million.
