Campbell Brothers acquires ACIRL

Brisbane-based diversified industrial company Campbell Brothers Limited (CBL) (ASX: CPB) today announced the acquisition of leading Australian coal services company, ACIRL Pty Ltd, for A$76.8 million.

ACIRL, based in Ipswich, Queensland, is a provider of analytical and coal technology services to the black coal industry. It has 8 major laboratories and 5 onsite laboratories operating in NSW and Queensland, all located within close proximity to Australia’s major coal basins and export ports.

ACIRL employs approximately 400 people and is a market leader in the coal testing and analysis industry with approximately 46 per cent market share.

ACIRL’s principal customer groups are major mining and exploration companies in the coal industry.

The acquisition was made by CBL’s laboratory services division, ALS Laboratory Group (ALS), one of the largest and most successful commercial laboratory services groups in the world.

CBL’s Managing Director Greg Kilmister said the acquisition of ACIRL provides the Company with an excellent vehicle to grow its presence in the coal testing and superintending market in Australia and offshore.

“The ACIRL acquisition complements our existing start-up coal testing operations in Australia, giving us immediate market share and brings forward our plans for further laboratories,” he said.

“The acquisition of ACIRL provides another significant step in the Company’s strategy of further diversifying its analytical services business”.

Mr Kilmister went on to say that the strong demand for coal consumption is expected to drive the demand for coal testing and analysis services, with the increased capacity of Australian ports expected to lead to a significant increase in demand for ACIRL’s superintending services.
