Campbell Brothers enters Environmental Market in the USA

Brisbane-based diversified industrial company Campbell Brothers Limited (CBL) (ASX: CPB) today announced the acquisition of the US environmental analytical laboratory group, e-Lab Analytical Inc.

e-Lab is a midsized environmental analytical laboratory group based in Houston, Texas. e-Lab also operates a laboratory in Holland, Michigan in the North East of the USA and has three small depots or service centres that provide access to additional markets. e-Lab has approximately 100 staff and is the market leader in Texas. In a recent US survey they were rated the 4[th] most productive laboratory in the USA, and have a market reputation for high quality and an enviable record for on-time delivery of results.

The acquisition was made by CBL’s laboratory services division, ALS Laboratory Group (ALS), one of the largest and most successful commercial laboratory services groups in the world.

e-Lab was acquired for an initial cash consideration of A$18 million, with a further cash amount of A$4 million payable over the next two years depending on the profitability of e-Lab through that period. The previous owners of e-Lab will remain with the business to help manage the further development and expansion of ALS throughout the USA.

CBL’s Managing Director Greg Kilmister said ALS has a current focus of building an environmental analytical laboratory network in the USA to complement ALS’ existing mineral laboratories in the USA.

“The acquisition of e-Lab provides the company with an excellent vehicle to grow our presence in the USA. The commercial environmental analytical market in the USA is the largest in the world; worth in excess of A$2 billion per year.” he said.

Mr Kilmister went on to say that “The e-Lab acquisition complements our existing environmental laboratories in Australia, Asia, Europe, South America and Canada; allows us better access to a global client base; and cements our position as one of the largest commercial environmental analytical groups in the world. We expect to open further laboratories in the USA over coming years, to fully service that market.”

Following the acquisition of e-Lab, ALS will have approximately 1,750 staff in North America.
