ÅF wins strategic assignment for Stockholm Bypass

ÅF has, in collaboration with the engineering consultancy Scott Wilson UK, been awarded two of the four contracts to provide technical consulting services for the major Stockholm Bypass project. The principal is the Swedish Transport Administration.

The contract is estimated to be worth close to SEK 200 million (EUR 21 million), of which approximately 2/3 will accrue to ÅF and the remainder to Scott Wilson. ÅF's involvement in the project, which relates to project planning and project engineering work for the interchanges at Akalla and Häggvik and the rock tunnels, will commence after the summer and is expected to extend over a two-year period.

For ÅF, winning these assignments is a strategic success that reflects the company's resolve to become a leading name in Infrastructure Planning. As a result of focused efforts over the past 12 months, ÅF now has 450 consultants who are experts in this field. Thanks to today's positive news, ÅF sees opportunities to continue to develop within this important sector.

The Stockholm Bypass is planned as a new motorway that will provide a direct link between the northern and southern parts of the county, relieve congestion in central Stockholm and make the traffic systems of the Swedish capital as a whole less vulnerable to disruption. For most of the route – just over 17 kilometres of the total length of 21 kilometres – traffic will travel in a tunnel. The Stockholm Bypass project was given the go-ahead following a decision by the Swedish government on 3 September 2009.
