Bologna Airport's traffic performed well in January: passengers were 704,521, with an increase of 9.9% on January 2019 while flight movement growth was lower, delivering an increase of 4.3% (5,601 movements). This was the first time Bologna Airport exceeded 700 thousand passengers in January.

In detail, international passengers were 556,346 with a growth of 12.2% on 2019, while domestic passengers were 148,175, increasing by 1.8% versus January 2019.

Air cargo performance slowed down by 13.1% on previous year, totaling 2,875 tons.

January's three most popular destinations were: Madrid, with 29 thousand passengers, Catania (over 28 thousand passengers) and Barcelona (over 27 thousand passengers). The top-ten ranking also includes: Palermo, Paris CDG, Rome Fiumicino, Frankfurt, London Heathrow, London Stansted and Dubai.

In the last few days, "Conferenza dei Servizi" (local and governmental agencies hearing) gave the green light to Bologna Airport 2016-2030 Development Plan, to support its traffic growth trend in a sustainable way, in compliance with the prescriptions of the Environmental Impact Assessment (VIA) Decree and the local implementing acts and agreements.

The Masterplan describes the construction phases of different projects, the most relevant ones being: the expansion of the Passenger Terminal, enlarging the terminal surface by over 20 thousand square metres, the construction of a multi-store car park dedicated to passengers and car rentals with 2,000 additional parking spaces and a "green belt" of about 40 hectares north of the airport to absorb carbon dioxide.
