Publication of Lifecycle Associates' analysis on carbon emissions reductions from CoalSwitch®

Active Energy, the London quoted international biomass based renewable energy business, is pleased to announce the completion of a comprehensive study on the carbon impact of CoalSwitch® by Life Cycle Associates LLC, an independent business and environmental consultancy, based in California, specializing in life cycle analysis of fuel production pathways (https://www.lifecycleassociates.com/).

Highlights

·    The Life Cycle Associates analysis demonstrates that pellet made from lumbermill waste, such as CoalSwitch® reduces CO2 by:

o  99% relative to coal; and

o  97% relative to natural gas.

·    The environmental analysis builds upon the results of independent co-fire testing undertaken under the STEP Program co-ordinated by Brigham Young University, Rocky Mountain Power and the University of Utah in late 2021. These results demonstrated that CoalSwitch® co-fires successfully with coal and produces immediate burn emissions benefits without significant capital expenditure to existing facilities.

Life Cycle Associates' analysis includes upstream and downstream analysis

The analysis demonstrates CoalSwitch® is sustainably sourced, performs the same or better as coal and natural gas, and is a net-zero, clean energy option for power generation. The comprehensive lifecycle analysis of greenhouse gas ("GHG") emissions for woody biomass includes: (i) emissions associated with feedstock collection/production and transportation; (ii) the production of process fuels; (iii) the delivery of the product to the power plant; and (iv) the burning the fuels. The analysis also considered that wood pellets are made from lumbermill waste and forest residue that would otherwise generate GHGs, either through the process of decomposition or burning.

CoalSwitch® heating value is equivalent to  coal and better than white pellets

In early 2022, AEG received the results of independent testing that demonstrated CoalSwitch® burns cleaner and produces fewer pollutants than coal while outperforming other "white" pellets. The testing was conducted under the STEP Program in Utah co-ordinated by Brigham Young University, Rocky Mountain Power and the University of Utah.  The program was funded independently through Rocky Mountain Power's Sustainable Transportation and Energy Plan (the "STEP Program").
