Executive Movements

John Dawkins Chairman

Peter Meers Deputy Chairman

Drago Panich Goulburn Bauxite Project Manager

To support ABx’s rapid growth and to expand effective government and stakeholder relations, the ABx board has appointed John Dawkins as Chairman, with Peter Meers moving to Deputy Chairman. Peter will work with ABx CEO, Ian Levy in an executive capacity, drawing on his unique experience, assisting in the administrative and financial areas of the business.

Mr Dawkins earliest exposure to the mining industry was when as Minister for Trade (1984-1987) in the Hawke Government he was responsible for the administration of export controls on certain minerals until he proposed the abolition of these arrangements in order to improve the operation of the market. During his time in Government, Mr Dawkins served in a number of other portfolios including Minister for Finance (1983-1984), Minister for Employment, Education and Training (1987-1991) and Treasurer (1991-1993) in the Keating Government.

Mr Dawkins brings to ABx a wealth of governance experience, including prominent roles in public and private institutions. He chairs the Australian Qualifications Framework Council and the Board of Governors of the Institute for International Trade at the University of Adelaide and is on the unlisted Government Board of Relations Australia Advisory Ltd.

Peter Meers, Executive Deputy Chairman

Peter has broad experience across a range of industries including financial services (consumer, commercial and investment banking, securities trading and origination), mining and exploration and building materials.

In the area of financial services he was responsible for establishment of new business operations in China, Vietnam, Philippines and Indonesia.

Drago Panich is a senior mining engineer. He has an unusually extensive, skilled knowledge of the minerals/mining industry, due to over forty years of practical experience in Australia and overseas and twelve years lecturing at the University of NSW in mineral economics, mine planning, feasibility studies and reserves estimation.

Drago has worked on coal, gold, uranium, kaolin, opal and gravel projects, and has planned, budgeted, coordinated and managed mining and rehabilitation programs, including grade control and environmental problems. He has demonstrated management expertise with staff, resources, environmental assessments, audits and reports, and in negotiations with landholders, native title holders/claimants and government.
