On Tuesday, the new district heating plant – a joint venture between AAK and Karlshamn Energi (KEAB) – was officially opened by Lena Sommestad, President of Svensk Fjärrvärme, the Swedish District Heating Association.
The new district heating plant is the result of a joint project, in which AAK will supply reserve heat whenever KEAB's usual supplier, Södra Cell in Mörrum, shuts down for maintenance work.
"We are delighted to have the opportunity of supplying district heating, mostly based on biofuels, to KEAB" says Bo Svensson, CEO of AarhusKarlshamn Sweden AB. "Efficient energy usage is fundamental for AAK, with its highly energy-intensive operation, in which the environment plays an important part. Efficient energy usage is a vital area to focus on to achieve competitive production."
"We see this official opening of the new joint district heating plant as an important stage in our investment in environmentally low-impact district heating generation," says Hans-Inge Bengtsson, Managing Director of Karlshamn Energi (KEAB). "We built the first phase of the present district heating network in the 1970s, and deliveries from Södra Cell Mörrum began in the 1980s. This collaboration with AAK takes us a step further towards a fossil fuel-free district heating system."
"In the past few days, KEAB obtained the 'Good Environmental Choice' ecolabel by meeting the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation's criteria. This certification enables us to give added value to our customers."
