Plastic Omnium at the 67th Frankfurt Motor Show: Tomorrow's clean, connected car

Plastic Omnium, the world leader in exterior products and modules and fuel systems, is presenting for the first time at the Frankfurt Motor Show a concept car that demonstrates the company's contribution to the clean, connected car for 2030. The car of the future will have:

• increased driving range thanks to new lightweighting and aerodynamic solutions and the use of supercapacitors to store braking energy
• no polluting emissions thanks to hydrogen and fuel cell propulsion
• the capacity to communicate with its surroundings thanks to the lighting system integrated into its structure.

In the meantime, vehicles will continue to become increasingly intelligent, lighter and less polluting, as demonstrated in various prototypes:

• A bumper with optimally integrated radars due to electromagnetic-wave permeable plastics, and including an active aerodynamic system and a lighting system based on flexible optical fibers. The bumper delivers top styling and reduces CO² by 2.5 g/km.
• A tailgate made from high-performance composites, offering facial recognition to unlock the vehicle, a touch and open system that works through conductive paint, and message display on a transparent area. The tailgate interacts with its surroundings and reduces CO² by 3 g/km.
• A new water injection system designed to improve the performance of gasoline engines that reduces CO² emissions by up to 15%.
• A full range of energy storage systems, including high-pressure hydrogen storage tanks controlled electronically for plug-in hybrids.

These innovations are the result of an ongoing policy under which 6% of revenue, totaling €500 million, was invested in R&D in 2017, supported by 3,500 engineers, 23 R&D centers and a 4,000-strong patent portfolio. This level of R&D investment will continue in coming years.

Plastic Omnium's R&D policy confirms its intention to play a full part in developing the cleaner, safer, and smarter car of the future.
