Kerlink and Dutch Partner MCS Help Deploy Versatile IoT Network Coverage of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol

Rollout Illustrates Kerlink's Focus on Fast-Growing Verticals, Including Smart Airports Market

PRESS RELEASE

Thorigné-Fouillard, France – Dec. 17, 2019, 8:30 Am CET – Kerlink (AKLK – FR0013156007), a specialist in solutions dedicated to the Internet of Things (IoT), and MCS, a Dutch company that provides businesses and system integrators with industrial IoT (IIoT) solutions and private communication networks, have completed the joint deployment of a LoRaWAN private IoT network in The Netherlands at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, one of the largest international airports in Europe.

The network offers coverage in all public areas such as the arrival and departure halls, lounges, piers, and Schiphol Plaza, and in non-public areas such as the baggage basements and aprons. Based on Kerlink's network infrastructure and solutions, MCS deployed a network of sensors, including accelerometers, barometers, and magnetometers that transmit and monitor data such as indoor temperatures and humidity levels and data coming from the more than 500 sensors deployed to rate the cleanliness of the toilets.

The private network is powered by multiple industrial-grade Kerlink Wirnet™ iBTS outdoor and WirnetiFemtoCell indoor LoRaWAN® gateways. Kerlink Wanesy™ Management Center, combining a LoRa Network Server and real-time radio/gateway remote-management tools, enables network global orchestration and accelerates airport digitalization to deliver new services for operations, guests, and passenger handling, as well as for shops, restaurants, and hotels.

The network was designed and is operated by Schiphol Telematics, a specialized telecommunications provider that serves business clients in the complex environment of the airport.

Thanks to its greater range and reduced power consumption compared to Wi-Fi, the LoRaWAN network is ideally suited for connecting with smart sensors and sending data over long distances. The sensors connect facilities and infrastructure at Schiphol Airport to the Internet, while the information from these sensors provides airport managers with instantaneous information about facilities.

"This collaboration with our Dutch distribution partner MCS shows how two nimble, customer-focused companies can work with local authorities to design, deploy, and operate private networks that achieve the authorities' specific goals," said Aurélien Seugnet, Kerlink's key account manager. "In addition, the Schiphol Airport project highlights Kerlink's continuing success in serving major public-facility verticals such as smart airports, smart cities, and smart harbors with turnkey connectivity solutions."

"Our partnership with Kerlink, which began five years ago, helped Schiphol Airport to design and install a multi-application IoT network that will monitor a large facility, improve services for travelers, and reduce energy use," said MCS CCO Jasper den Hartog. "We expect to build on this success and work with officials across The Netherlands to install more key smart networks."
