PRESS RELEASE 28 March 2008
The Estonian War of Independence began 90 years ago, and plans to build a monument commemorating this struggle and the country's emancipation have been underway since that time. SWECO's Estonian subsidiary has now been selected to make this monument a reality.
In October last year SWECO was selected to transform Freedom Square, the heart of Tallinn in the centre of the city's old town district. The monument to the War of Independence will be placed adjacent to the square and SWECO has been given responsibility for everything from the permitting process to completion of the construction documents needed to create and prepare the site where the monument will stand.
"It is a considerable challenge to take part in completing something that has been so widely discussed and had such a strong presence in the public consciousness for so long. We want to bring together the monument and Freedom Square in a visual and spatial whole and make this an integral urban space in the future," says Aare Uusalu, Managing Director of SWECO Projekt in Estonia.
The monument itself, to be made of glass, is being created by the Czech company Sans Souci International. SWECO's contract has been awarded by the Estonian Ministry of Defence and is worth EUR 0.5 million.
SWECO is the Nordic region's leading provider of consulting services with combined expertise in engineering, environmental technology and architecture. SWECO has around 5,300 employees in ten countries and recorded annual sales of around SEK 4.6 billion in 2007. The company has projects currently underway in some 80 countries worldwide. The SWECO share is quoted on the Stockholm Stock Exchange. SWECO is a member of OMX Nordic Exchange in Stockholm.
