There is an urgent need for new solutions to rationalise healthcare facilities and simplify everyday activities for both the staff and patients. Our solution is well adapted to modern hospital conditions in the form of meagre resources, care−intensive patients and demanding flexibility requirements, says Jan Mattsson, President of Sweco Architects.
The proposal is based on facilities that permit a varying number of beds throughout the hours of the day and days of the week and where it is simple to convert clinic areas into patient wards, and vice versa. In addition, the proposed layout promotes team work and short distances create scope for adequate staffing even on shifts with fewer personnel.
In major hospital expansions of this type, we make use of our wide−ranging experience from hospital projects in Sweden and around the world. In preparation for the competition, we put together a team of architects from several different Sweco offices, says Jan Mattsson.
The proposed building has a simple structure and connects seamlessly to the existing hospital core. The shape of the façade allows for variations in the buildings floor plan, providing good flexibility for the future. The building will contain more than one hundred beds together with clinics, an obstetrics department and a surgical unit.
Swecos proposal was chosen in competition with three other architectural firms that have experience in healthcare assignments. The proposal will now serve as a basis for continued development and planning.
