Pressrelease May 4. 2009 from Rederi AB Transatlantic (publ)

World‐leading experts advance ice management in the Transatlantic Ice Council

The Transatlantic Ice Council is an international advisory board, established independently from Transatlantic, whose objective is to provide advice on ice management and icebreaking based on the collective experience of its members.

The leading international experts of the Ice Council board are from Sweden, Finland, Russia, Canada, Germany and the United States and have been selected for their experience and operational excellence.

Transatlantic focuses on setting the standards for safe and efficient operations.

"The purpose of the Ice Council is to advise Transatlantic and its clients on challenging ice conditions and share best practice and knowledge on safe and efficient operations in the sensitive Arctic environment," says Stefan Eliasson, Head of Transatlantic's Offshore/Icebreaking business area.

The Transatlantic Ice Council is funded by Transatlantic, but is an independent body with its own agenda. Its chairman is Anders Backman, former head of the Swedish Maritime Administration´s icebreaking services and an internationally recognized expert on Arctic marine operations.

"We share the conviction that all parties involved in Arctic operations should cooperate in developing safe ice management systems, risk analysis and processes in order to establish a unified vision on how to avoid accidents and reduce environmental impact," says Anders Backman.

The first open session of the Transatlantic Ice Council will be held in June in connection with POAC 09, the 20th International Conference on Port and Ocean Engineering under Arctic Conditions, in Luleå, Sweden.

Transatlantic sets standards for operations in Arctic waters

Transatlantic has developed an integrated operational system that combines offshore and ice management services. Three support systems are designed to optimize customer operations: The Transatlantic Ice Council • The Transatlantic Ice Master • The Transatlantic Ice Academy

The Transatlantic Ice Master is a Strategic, Tactic & Daily Operation System for Arctic offshore operations, developed in cooperation with SSPA in Gothenburg.

The Transatlantic Ice Academy is a unique company‐sponsored training program that provides cutting‐ edge training in ice management and icebreaking for both Transatlantic and the officers and crews of its clients and partners, preparing them for demanding operations in ice conditions.
