Sweco studying station sites for high-speed rail in Skåne

Efforts to study the conditions for high-speed rail in the Skåne region of southern Sweden are now moving forward. Sweco has been given responsibility for examining suitable sites for future train stations in the region. The assignment is the next step after the study on high-speed rail in Sweden that was carried out at the request of the government in 2009.

Sweco will investigate station sites in Lund, Malmö, Helsingborg, Perstorp and Hässleholm. Among other things, Sweco will study whether the stations should be located in the city centres or whether they should be reached by buses or regional trains.

"Central locations are naturally easier to access for most people and they connect to the existing communications, but they are also associated with higher construction costs due to the lack of space and they have a major impact on the existing urban environment. To handle these complex issues, we have put together a team with local know-how together with national and international expertise," says Stefan Gustafsson, Regional Manager at Sweco in Malmö.

Sweco's assignment is being carried out on behalf of the Skåne and Skåne Northeast regions and the municipalities of Malmö, Lund and Helsingborg. The study will be presented in the beginning of September.

In the future, high-speed rail may compete with air travel on distances up to around 700 km. For example, the journey between Stockholm and Malmö, which today takes four hours and 30 minutes with the X2000, will take less than three hours by high-speed rail.
