Saint-Gobain has today inaugurated its CertainTeed plasterboard plant in Sainte-Catherine, near Montreal, Canada, which is now fully electrified and powered by hydroelectricity. This site becomes the first zero-carbon (scope 1 and 2) plasterboard plant in North America and the largest in the world to be fully powered by electricity.
The launch of a new production line at the existing plant, along with equipment modernization, has enabled a 40% increase in production capacity while reducing energy consumption by 30% and CO₂ emissions by approximately 44,000 tons per year.
"This ambitious project strengthens our leadership position in light construction in Canada and meets the strong local demand for sustainable solutions. It accelerates our growth in the country, where we have tripled in size in 3 years", explains Mark Rayfield, CEO Saint-Gobain North America.
This 100% renewable electricity plasterboard plant is the Group's second after the one in Fredrikstad, Norway, inaugurated in 2023. This initiative is a new clear manifestation of Saint-Gobain's commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Worldwide leader in light and sustainable construction, Saint-Gobain designs, manufactures and distributes materials and services for the construction and industrial markets. Its integrated solutions for the renovation of public and private buildings, light construction and the decarbonization of construction and industry are developed through a continuous innovation process and provide sustainability and performance. The Group, celebrating its 360th anniversary in 2025, remains more committed than ever to its purpose "MAKING THE WORLD A BETTER HOME".
