As MMIT invests in equities it may therefore be subject to volatility. This requires an elevated risk tolerance and capacity.

MONTHLY PERFORMANCE*

COMMENTARY

Emerging markets extended their recovery from the early April trough recording solid gains. Trade tensions eased broadly in May, highlighted by the announcement of the first U.S. trade agreement with the United Kingdom. Meanwhile, the United States and China reached a temporary accord aimed at deescalating their trade dispute, agreeing to reduce tariffs to 30% on Chinese imports and 10% on U.S. imports. In a separate development, the U.S. Court of International Trade ruled that President Trump's reciprocal tariffs were unlawful—a decision the White House is currently appealing.

Over the period, the Mobius Investment Trust's (MMIT) net asset value per share (NAV) and share price returned +3.8% and +5.0% respectively, while the MSCI EM Mid Cap Index Net TR (GBP) returned +4.3%. MMIT's performance demonstrated a strong recovery in May having been impacted by heightened volatility and negative investor sentiment caused by the escalating trade war. We believe that portfolio companies remain fundamentally strong, as evidenced by a series of robust and better-thanexpected Q1 earnings reports. Encouragingly, several companies also provided confident outlooks despite ongoing political uncertainty. The main contributors to performance were Taiwanese speciality materials provider Elite Material (+1.5%), Korean atomic force microscopy provider Park Systems (+1.4%), and Taiwanese equipment manufacturer Chroma (+0.9%). The main detractors to performance were LatAm pharmaceutical chain Raia Drogasil (-0.9%), Thai software provider Bluebik (-0.5%), and Indian online auto classifieds platform CarTrade (-0.4%).

Opportunities

    • Focus on dynamic small and mid-sized companies in many of the fastest growing economies in the world
    • Fundamental bottom-up research process identifies resilient business models which are undervalued and mispriced
    • Lower ESG standards in emerging and frontier markets offer a unique opportunity for active engagement approach
    • Create value by delivering a clear ESG pathway for our portfolio companies
    • Concentrated portfolio allows a customised engagement strategy for each company

Risks

  • ‒ MMIT pursues an active management style. Its performance may therefore deviate considerably from that of a comparable market return
  • ‒ Pronounced fluctuations in price are characteristic of emerging and frontier economies. Other characteristics include specific risks such as lower market transparency, regulatory hurdles, illiquidity of markets as well as political and social challenges
  • ‒ Investments via Shanghai or Shenzhen Stock Connect are subject to additional risks, quota limitations, custody risk, clearing/settlement risk and counterparty risk
  • ‒ Focusing intentionally on stocks in small and medium cap companies may entail additional risks (e.g. lower liquidity)
